これはいわゆる「感情のshould」をいれろという問題だと思います 「ある事柄が当然だ、驚きだ、意外だ」といったような、当然のことか 否かという話者の気持ちを表す形容詞（strange、surpring、incredibleなど）が導くThat節（その事柄の内容）では S ＋ should ＋ 原形 （現在の事柄） S ＋ should ＋ 現在完了（過去の事柄） という形になります。 間違えてはいけないのは、 問題の文がただしくないのではなく、that節の内部が意外だという形容詞が導くthat節内ではshouldが省略できないということです。 とくに発言者に驚きがなければ問題文は単なる事実描写文として成立します。 つまりthat節の内容に特に話者が驚きをかんじていない場合、 It is strange that so elegant birds make ugly sounds which we can hardly stand for even a munite. といった文も可能ですが、 「見た目はエレガントで美しい声をだしそうなものなのに、汚い声を出す」といった驚きがこめられていると解釈できるので、そのためshouldをいれる、また、この使われかたをするshouldは、insist tha節tや、It is important that節の内部でshouldの省略がおこるのとは違い、省略できません。 受験英語と、that節の内容からかんがみて It is strange that so elegant birds should make ugly sounds which we can hardly stand for even a munite. としなさいということだと思います。

We can hardly imagine thought without language,not thought that is precise. これは、ある参考書からの抜粋です。 文中の「not」は、「We can not imagine thought without language」の省略だと解説されていました。 ここで疑問に思ったことがあります。「not」と「hardly」を入れ替え、「We can hardly imagine thought without language,hardly thought that is precise.」（意味は異なりますが）という文は可能でしょうか？
