こんにちは！ The scientist was very tense,trying to think of things he didn't know so he could try to figure them out. ann2008さん訳：その科学者はとても緊張していたそしてわからなっかたことを解決できるように考えようとした。 まず、so ... could は、so that ... could で、１）目的、２）結果の両方の可能性があります。コンマの有無は、あれば、２）の可能性が高いですが、１）２）どちらかを100％決定づけるほどのものではありません。 ここは、意味的に、ann2008さんの解釈通り、目的ですね。 高校生の方ですか？だと、相当上級者ですね。問題集の解説者が分かっていない難しい構造を、全部見抜いていらっしゃいます。 tense は緊張してでいいですが、trying to ... と繋がっていますので、「その科学者は、わからなかったことを解決できるよう、とても緊張して考えようとしていた。」のように、連用形で接続すると英語の呼吸とよく合いますよ☆ いずれ英語がすらすら読めるようになる力を持っておられる羨むべき方だと思います。基礎を軽視せず、継続して努力されて下さい！ 以上、ご参考になれば幸いです！

総称表現。例えば英語で「科学者」とか「詩人」とか言う時はそれぞれ the scientist や the poet でいいのですか？ ●Facts are to the scientist what words are to the poet.(言葉が詩人にとって重要であるのと同じように、事実は科学者にとって重要である) 例えばこういう文章は、特定の科学者や詩人の事ではなく、広く一般の科学者や詩人の事を言ってるわけですから、scientists や poets としてはダメなのですか？
