こんにちは。10／13のご質問ではお返事を有難うございました。 ご質問： ＜If I did not have the operation I might come to not be able to walk any more.としてみましたが＞ １．仮定法を使うというアイディアは正解です。ただ、時制に訂正が必要です。 ２．この例文では、仮定法過去の条件節＋帰結節になっています。しかし、ご質問にある日本文を仮定法で表すと、条件節は仮定法過去完了、帰結節は仮定法過去の帰結、という時制の混合した用法になります。 ３．理由は、条件節では過去の事実と異なることの仮定、帰結節では現在の事実と異なる推量になるからです。 ４．この日本文は仮定法になっていますが、叙実法（事実を述べる用法）にしてみると、 「（過去に）手術を受けたので、（今）私は歩ける」という、それぞれ過去と現在の事実があります。 ５．これらの事実と反対のことを仮定したのが仮定法です。条件節では過去の事実と反対のことを仮定するので仮定法過去完了、帰結節では現在の事実と反対のことを推量するので仮定法過去の時制になるのです。 ６．訳し方について （１）（足の）手術を受ける： be operated on for my leg have an operation for my leg have my leg operated on などの表現があります。 （２）歩けなくなる： become(be) incapable of walking become(be) unable to walk get oneself incapable of walking(unable to walk) ぐらいでいいでしょう。come to「～になる」という表現も使えますが、このイディオムはどちらかというと達成のニュアンスで使われるので、被害のニュアンスではgetの方が適切です。 ７．まず叙実法で英文を作ってみましょう。 例： As I had an operation (for my leg), I am now able to walk. 「（過去に）足の手術をしたので、今は歩けます」 という事実があります。 ８．これを仮定法にすると、 If I had not have an operation (for my leg), I would be now unable to walk. 「（過去に）足の手術をしていなかったら、今は歩くことができないでしょう」 となります。 ９．他の表現を使っても、「仮定法過去完了の条件節＋仮定法過去の帰結節」の時制は変わりません。 例： If I had not been operated on (for my leg), I would become incapable of walking now. 英文法の質問です。 よく次の例文の（１）から（２）へ、もしくは（２）から（１）へという書き換え問題があると思います。 （１） I was so tired that I could not walk any more. （２） I was too tired to walk any more. そして、（１）＝（２）という記号が付いていることが多いと思います。しかし形が違うので、なにかしらの意味の違いがあると思います。 （ア）そこで、この二つの文には、どういう違いがあるのですか？もしくは違いはないのですか？ （イ）もしあれば、なにか使われる文脈などに違いがあるのですか？ よろしくお願いします。

英語の翻訳と解説をお願いいたします！ 『私の家族が貧しかったら、私はNYに来ることができなかったかもしれません』 という文を翻訳お願いいたします！ 仮定法過去完了を使うのかと思いましたが、 『家族が貧しくない』ということは最初から変わらないことなので、迷いました。 If my family had been poor, I might not have been able to come to NY. このようになるのでしょうか？ それとも、If節をただの仮定法のように過去形にすることは可能なのでしょうか？ If my family had been poor, I might not have been able to come to NY. このような文はみたことありません。 しかし、その逆（主節が普通の仮定法）はありますよね？たとえば If I had gone out yesterday, my cold might recur. のような感じで・・・ とても混乱しています！どうか、お助けください！よろしくお願いいたします！

タイトルの文を英訳するとどうなりますか？ “I may not be able to see you any more.”としちゃうと、逢える可能性がなくなるし、be able toという句もなんとなく馴染まないような気がします。 正しくはどのように表現したらいいでしょうか？

Although I had a general interest in the answers, I was startled and puzzled when the man guiding me around took me back to his office and opened a brochure that gave detailed information on the age of the campus, the student population, and the old white Grecian-style building. I now realize he must have thought I was some kind of information fiend. It is a good thing I did not ask any questions that he might have taken as hints for action like "Where did you get those delightful sandals you are wearing?". The man showing me around wore ship-on sandals and might have felt obigated to present me with a similar pair!
