Men must endeavour to afford each other every pleasure suitable to the taste and inclinations of each, of whatever kind they may be. But as it is not to be expected, that a whole nation should become philosophers, and comprehend this truth, and as the majority would probably make use of this doctrine only to the injury of others, it is absolutely necessary to deceive the common people, and convince them that there is a superior power which sees our most secret actions, and to which we must one day give a strict account of all the evil done to our fellow-creatures, and severely atone for it. 「every pleasure suitable to the taste and inclinations of each, of whatever kind they may be」の辺りが特に苦しいです。

it is absolutely necessary to deceive the common people and [to] convince them that there is a superior power which sees our most secret actions, and to which we must one day give a strict account of all the evil done to our fellow-creatures, and severely atone for it.

"to afford each other every pleasure suitable to the taste and inclinations of each" の訳がおかしいように感じますが。

It will both wonderful and strange, yet inescapable. Like a compelling dream. A haunting attraction. It may bring pleasure or pain or both, but whatever it brings you will not get let it go. You’ll not can forget him. You will seem to live between two worlds. The dull outer every day material world, and the magical inner world of the dream. The two will be interwoven and inseparable. This is because there may be a karmic bond between you, subconscious memories of past lives that binds you emotionally and draws one of you back to other all the time. Think of it this way. Each of us is, more or less, an egg. Each of us is a unique, irreplaceable soul enclosed in a fragile shell. This is true of me, and it is true of each of you. And each of us, to a greater or lesser degree, is "The System". The System is supposed to protect us, but sometimes it take on a life of its own, and then it begins to kill us and cause us to kill others-coldly, efficiently, systematically.

It is evident that, in entering upon this wider field, I shall frequently have to quit the narrower limits of direct obser vation within which my former work was confined ; and it is chiefly because I think it desirable clearly to distinguish between the objects of Comparative Psychology as a science, and any inferences or doctrines which may be connected with its study, that I have made so complete a-partition of the facts of animal intelligence from the theories which I believe these facts to justify. So much, then, for the reasons which have led to the form of these essays, and the relations which I intend the one to bear to the other. I may now say a few words to indicate the structure and scope of the present essay. Every discussion must rest on some basis of assumption ; every thesis must have some hypothesis. The hypothesis v which I shall take is that of the truth of the general theory of Evolution : I shall assume the truth of this theory so far as I feel that all competent persona of the present day will be prepared to allow me. I must therefore first define what degree of latitude I suppose to be thus conceded.

It is the use we make of the powers entrusted to us, which constitutes our only just claim to respect. He who employs his one talent aright is as much to be honored as he to whom ten talents have been given. There is really no more personal merit attaching to the possession of superior intellectual powers than there is in the succession to a large estate. How are those powers used how is that estate employed? The mind may accumulate large stores of knowledge without any useful purpose; but the knowledge must be allied to goodness and wisdom, and embodied in upright character, otherwise it is naught.

That a man's business, be it of any kind, must be done, and done promptly, is a truth acknowledged universally. (1)be it of any kindはeven if be of any kind の倒置と省略が行われているとまではわかりましたがなぜ「is」でなく「be」なのかがわかりません。 (2)That ~is a truth acknowledged universally.
