以下のとおりお答えします。 ＞添付ファイルリンク: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LNHBMFCzznE&vl=en にいる話者が6:41辺りで、 話している部分について質問です。 So recently stroke dropped from being the third leading cause of the death in the United States to be the fourth leading cause of the death. from .. to..の形が使われているのですが、 from の後にはbeing が、 toの後にはbeが使われていて、 なぜto の後がbeing でなく、原形不定詞のように使われているのか分からないです。 ⇒to の後もbeing でいいと思いますが、同語反復を避けたかったのではないでしょうか。もちろん、原文のようにto の後がbe であっても支障はありません。 理由は、以下のとおりです。 「being は動名詞で、to be はto不定詞の名詞的用法」でしょう。being the third ～ to be the fourth…「第３の～（であること）から第４の…（であること）に下がった」といったニュアンスになります。

いつもお世話になっております。 読売の社説からの一文です。 According to the panel, the reason for the policy change is that the murals, if returned to the stone chamber, “could not be prevented, without question, from being subject again to damage from microorganisms like mold due to a lack of established technology.” 訳は、 有識者によると、政策を変更する理由は、もし石室に外に戻したら、壁画は既存の技術が不足しているので、再びカビのような微生物のダメージを防げない（妨げれない）、ということが理由である。 という風になるのはわかるのですが、 could not be prevented from being subject again to damage from microorganisms の部分は 1. prevent from のあとはing系が来る→being 2. be subject toの部分が→being subject to 3. その結果、prevent from being subject to damage from～で、～から損傷を受けやすいこと妨げられない、という解釈で正しいのでしょうか？ よろしくお願いします。

1, 2, 3, 4, 5 という数字があり、lastの位置を基準として値の場所を読み取る英語について調べていました。 http://english.stackexchange.com/questions/56344/usage-of-second-third-fourth-last というリンクのMetaEdさんの回答があるのですが、 「The 2nd, is third from (or to) last」 という記載があります。この部分は正しいのでしょうか? - The third from last : 2 - The third to last: 2 - The second: 2 これら全て正しいでしょうか? 上記が正しい場合、わからないのが、オックスフォード現代英英辞典にて next to last を引いた時に 「second to last」 とも記載があることです。 上記の呼び方ではnext to lastに相当するのはfirst to lastになるのでは、と思っています。

The metal used to make them came from abroad. 上記英会話文の The metal used to make them came from abroad.の意味がいまいちよくわかりません。 「その金属は海外から輸入されたものです。」という意味なのかなと思っているのですが。。。 まず、句なのか、それとも節なのか、どちらでしょうか？ used to（～するために使われている金属） はThe meatlを修飾している形容詞句なのでしょうか？ それとも、used to（かつては～だった）の動詞の意味なのでしょうか？ それと、make them came from aboroad のmake は「them（金属？）を海外から来させる」の使役動詞なのでしょうか？使役動詞ならcame は原型のcomeになるべきではないでしょうか？ 短い文ですが、わからないだらけです。ご説明して頂けますでしょうか。よろしくお願いします。
