man「人間」を he でうける、 「人一般」の one を he で受ける、 doctor/friend/person など、単数なら he で受ける、 こういうことは昔から行われ、日本で英語を普通に学んだ人も そういう認識できました。 でも、男性の he とする理由がなく、 男女区別ない they とする、ということはよく言われます。 もっと言うと、人でなく、ものでも単数を they で受けることがあります。 ただし、「とある」的な a ～でなく、任意の～の意味の a ～ で書かれた単数名詞に対する人称代名詞です。 これは、名詞自体は単数で、a ～で「任意の一つの～」で表しながら、 代名詞は、総称複数的な複数の代名詞 they で表すものです。 基本的な鉄則で、they の表すものは複数名詞を探せ、的なものがあって、 それには反することになります。 単複無視して、「任意の一つ」、どれでもいい、総称的で、 代名詞は they で受けるというものです。 まあ、男女の別だけで they としてもいいですけど、 ものでもしばしば見られることです。
