The reason I respect Hiis Majesty the Emperor is that he plays a great role not only in praying happiness of the Japanese but cotributing to world peace all the time as a symbol of the state. play a great roll 後のinの位置は上記でよろしいでしょうか？またbut後にinは必要でしょうか？ 解説よろしくお願いします。

in (not only A but also B) より not only inA but also in B が普通。 in とその目的語でかたまり。 だから in の位置はここでよく、 後にも in が必要。 よく言われることです。

以前、フットボールの英文サイトを眺めていると、 The Grey Cup trophy, the symbol of Canadian football supremacy. という文がありました。しかし、別のサイトの英文記事では、 The Grey Cup trophy, a symbol of Canadian football supremacy. となっていました。「a」と「the」ではニュアンスが決定的に違うといいます。 他に例はないか英和辞典で調べてみますと、 philosophy that the emperor is the symbol of the state 象徴天皇制｛しょうちょう てんのうせい｝ system that recognizes the emperor as a symbol of the state 象徴天皇制｛しょうちょう てんのうせい｝ というのがありました。また、見出しは The symbol of *** となっているのに、 本文では a symbol of *** となっている文を見たこともあります。 the は「唯一のもの」、a は「多くのものの中の一つ」という意味ですが、 「symbol」の場合に限っては「aでもtheでもどっちでもいいじゃない」 と言われているような気分です。 「the symbol」と「a symbol」ではやはり 意味が違うのでしょうか？

中3の英語の教科書からキング牧師のスピーチでの1節です。 I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. ・・・・彼らの肌の色ではなく, 彼らの性格の中身で判断される・・・・のところですが、 not A but Bだとする解説書がありました。 一方、持ってる文法の参考書では、Ａ，Ｂは語なら語、句なら句とありました。 有名なスピーチの一節だということを考えなければ、受験英文法的には【not】 の位置は下記でしょうか？ they will be judged 【not】 by the color of their skin 【but】 by the content of their character.
