英語 比較の問題
He is clever rather than wise. He is more clever than wise. (彼は聡明というより抜け目ない。) I can't speak English ,let alone Russian. I can't speak English ,still less Russian. こちらは両方とも同意義でしょうか？ ご回答よろしくお願いします。

(1) He is clever rather than wise. (彼は賢いというよりは、抜け目がない。) (2) He is more clever than wise. (彼は賢い以上に、抜け目がない。) (1)では「彼が賢い(wise)」ということを一旦否定し、それよりもむしろ「抜け目がない(clever)」と言っています。 (2)では「彼が賢い」ということを一応認めつつ、但しそれにも増して「抜け目がない」と言っています。 従って(1)と(2)は同意義ではありません。 (3) I can't speak English, let alone Russian. (私はロシア語はおろか、英語を話せない。) (4) I can't speak English, still less Russian. (私は英語は話せない、ましてやロシア語などなおさらである。) (3)と(4)は同意義と言えると思います。 補足ですが、"let alone" により近い同意義フレーズとして、"not to mention" があります。 I can't speak English, not to mention Russian. (私はロシア語はおろか、英語を話せない。)

英語の比較級でわからないところがあります。 ①She studies harder than I do. ②Kate works harder than David. ③Naomi speaks English better than her mother. ④I speak English better than your father does. ⑤I don’t speak English as fluently as Aki does. ⑥You talk more than John does. という6つの文なんですが、塾ではthanの後の主語が代名詞ならばdo、does、is、areなどをつける。と習いました。 ①から③はその決まり通りにやっていたのでよくわかったのですが、④から⑥の様に代名詞ではない主語にも同じようにdoesを付ける文が出てきました。 どういった違いがあるか教えてください。 本当は塾の先生に聞けばいいのですが、お盆明けにテストがあっていい点を取りたいのです。 よろしくお願いします。
