acrossという単語について
There are many kinds of bridges. A bridge can be a log across a stream or a rope a river. A bridge can be a log across a stream or a rope a river.という文でacrossという単語が二つでてきていますがどういう意味かわかりません どなたか教えてくれないでしょうか?

A bridge can be a log across a stream or a rope across a river.とすれば２つacrossがあることになりますので、これで考えます。 crossは、横断する・横切るという意味です。たとえば、道路を横断するとか(cross the street)、太平洋を渡る(cross the Pacific Ocean)というように使います。 一方、この語にaをつけると品詞が変ります。acrossは前置詞にもなり、たとえば、川に橋がかかっているようなときにacrossを使います。 London Bridge is across the River Themes. ロンドン橋はテムズ川にかかっている。この場合、細く長い川を、「横切って」かかっているわけです。川の一方の岸から他方の岸まで、横にかかっているイメージです。 この語は、さらに、川の向こう側の意味にもなります。 His house is across the river. 彼の家は川の向こう側である。 これも、川をもし横切っていけば、その向こう側にあるという意味で、もともとの動詞のcrossの意味が生きています。 お示しの文も、a log across a stream→川にかかる丸太、a rope across a river→川にかかる縄ーーということで、いずれも、橋のように、川に対して、横にかかっている、つまり、丸太の橋であり、ロープも片方の岸からもう片方の岸にはられているーーこうしたものがbridge何だという説明文ですね。 訳 bridgeというのは、川にかかる丸太でも、川にかかるロープでもいい。 となります。 以上、ご参考になればと思います。

文章をいじりたくなりますね。 A bridge can be a log or a rope across a stream or river. とでもすれば意味が通ると思います。橋と言えない程度の原始的な橋の事例を２つ挙げています。

can は「…のこともある」と訳したらいいと思います。 A bridge can be a log across a stream or a rope a river. 橋は小川を横切る一本の丸太とかロープのこともあります。 ※stream, river はどちらも「小川」「川」なので、一回しか訳に入れませんでした。ただの丸太やロープでも橋になりうるということです。

下記の文章に関する質問です。 I alone cannot change the world but can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples. across the waters のイメージが掴めないです。 the waters の理解にも自信がないです。 across は「(平面的に)横切って」というように理解しているのですが、石を水に向かって投げる時は、なんとなくtoやintoの方をイメージしてしまいます。across になると、イメージができなくなります。 解説宜しくお願いします。 「わたしだけでは世界を変えることはできないですが、多くのさざなみをつくり出すために *水面に？？？*一石投じることはできます。」
