Thatが指す意味
下記英文についての質問です。 Never before in the history of mankind has a population had so many older people as that of the United States. この文の”That”はolder peopleを指しているで良いでしょうか？（populationを指しているようにも思えます） Thatが指している意味（単語）を解説して頂きたくよろしくお願い致します。

現在の世界人口が６０億、アメリカの人口が３億弱で、各国の高齢者(６５歳以上）の割合の統計（１５％～数％以下）の平均を５％程度に見積もると、「（世界）人口がアメリカの人口と同じくらいの数の高齢者を有することは、人類の歴史上、かってないことである。」という意味ではでしょうか。従って、この場合、that = population だと思います。

＃２です。補足です。 people だと those になるから×というのは よろしいかと思います。 ＜a + 名詞＞の場合は one で受ける決まりがあるので a population ではまずいのではないかと思います。 あくまでも文法的に見て＜the historu＞が正しい んじゃないかと考えたわけです。 でも、色々考えてみると、 <as～as>の場合は＜as 形容詞 a 名詞＞ になるんじゃないのか？ a は必要ないのか？ ～の部分が複数の場合は＜such ～ as＞になるんじゃないのか？ など色々分からない点がでてきました。 学校の先生など、専門の方に聞かれるのがよろしいかと 思います。 僕も気になって仕方なくなってきました・・

その that は名詞の繰り返しをさけるための that だと思います。＜the + 名詞＞の代わりに使われる もので、＜that of ～＞の形になることが多いです。 だから、その that は ＜the history＞を指しているんだと思います。 この that の用法はとてもよく出題されるので、 しっかりチェックされた方がいいと思います・・

ずばり、populationです。同じ単語の繰り返しを避けるのに用いられるthatですが、例文の場合、文脈上、「人口」をさしていると思われますし、そもそも、peopleならば複数扱いですので、thoseで言い換えます。

お願いします。 文内の語で誤っているものを1つ選ぶ問題です。 (1)(Never) before (2)(has) so many people in Japan (3)(been) interested (4)(in) soccer. 誤っているのは(2)。正しくはhave だと思うんですが、 この文は、 Never beforeが否定を表す語句となり文頭に出て倒置が起きている、 と考えていいでしょうか？ こういう形の例文を見つけることができませんでした。 よろしくお願いします。

What was the 3/5 compromise?という質問に対しての回答を探しました。 The southern states wanted their slaves to be counted. Their purpose was simply to maximize their influence in the new government. Virginia had 500,00022 free people and 300,000 slaves. South Carolina had 140,000 free people and just over 100,000 slaves. The other southern states had 1/3 or more of their total population as slaves. The northern states, by contrast, were critical of slavery and had fewer slaves in their population. Pennsylvania had 430,000 free people, but less than 4,000 slaves. Massachusetts was the second largest state with 475,000 people, but had no slaves.
