中3の英語の教科書からキング牧師のスピーチでの1節です。 I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. ・・・・彼らの肌の色ではなく, 彼らの性格の中身で判断される・・・・のところですが、 not A but Bだとする解説書がありました。 一方、持ってる文法の参考書では、Ａ，Ｂは語なら語、句なら句とありました。 有名なスピーチの一節だということを考えなければ、受験英文法的には【not】 の位置は下記でしょうか？ they will be judged 【not】 by the color of their skin 【but】 by the content of their character.

>they will be judged 【not】 by the color of their skin 【but】 by the content of their character. これも正しい表現です。対比されるものが、not→by the color of their skin、but→by the content of their characterと、より明確になっているともいえます。 ただ、否定語はできるだけ前に出すほうが好まれる、ということを考えると原文にも理があります。原文では英語でよくある同じ語の省略があるのです。省略部分を補うと、 >they will not be judged by the color of their skin but be judged bythe content of their character. となります。not→be judged by the color of their skin、but→be judged bythe content of their characterと実は長いわけで、もしそれが勘違いを起こしそうであれば、お考えの書き直しを用いるほうがよいといえます。 しかし実際には、演説で喋って誰もが即座に理解したように、原文も分かりやすいものとなっています。キング牧師も、いろいろ説教や演説をした経験から、それで分かるし、notも一語分とはいえ前に来ているので、原文のように喋ったのでしょう。 それだと、例えばthey will not be judged by the color of their skinと一気に言い（これで「肌の色で差別されない」が平易に伝わる）、butの前でちょっと間を置く、といった話し方が使えたりもします。お考えの言い方を使うなら、例えばjudgedで間を置き、次のnotを強く言い、といった話し方で言いたいことを強調できるかと思います。 どちらを選ぶかは、個人の判断でいいと思われます。

確かに、not A but B でおっしゃるような形になると習うのですが、 実際には not を動詞の否定の部分に持ってくることもあります。 they will be judged 【not】 by the color of their skin 【but】 by the content of their character. だと、 何かによって判断される、それは肌の色でなく、人格で。 本文のままだと、 「肌の色で判断されない」が「人格によって判断される」 but の後が肯定、となるのは上の場合と同じではあります。 どちらも可能です。

they will not be judged by the color of their skin but (will be judged) by the content of their character という風にカッコ内の動詞を入れるのが本来ですが、こういう場合には（重複を嫌がって）むしろ省くのが普通なのです。なお、前と後で違う動詞を用いるようなこともあります。 おっしゃるように they will be judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character と書いてもよいのですが、それだけが正しいとまでは言えません。割とフレキシブルなのです。

原文の方がいいと思います。 they will be judged までで「差別される」という意味になっています。 「人間の中身の人格によって」と最後に付け足していますが、キング牧師の「差別撤廃」の論旨からすれば、「差別されない」という意味の台詞 they will not be judged を聞かせる方が、民衆の誤解を招かずに済みます。 but by the content of their character は単なるロジックであり、人間を中身で差別する世の中になることを本心で望んでいる訳ではありません。not by ... の語順にすると、中身で差別する社会の到来を望んでいるように聞こえます。 スピーチなどの話し言葉は、その場の民衆には原稿が渡っている訳ではありません。後世の人間は残った記録からスピーチを再現できますが、現場の人にはそれができません。聞こえた箇所まででどのような意味になるのかは、慎重に考えなくてはならないと思います。

大学受験用の英文解釈に出ている問題なんですが、先ず It does not matter to a great actor what part he plays, whether it is that of a king or a beggar ; but only that he plays his part well. という英文です。全体の意味は分かっているつもりですが、but以下の部分が構文としてどのように成り立っているのかが分かりません。このbutは文の最初のIt does notのnotを受けたものと考えていいのでしょうか(いわゆるnot～butの構文として)？そして、but it only matters that が省略されたものと考えていいのでしょうか？ それとbutの直前の;はどういう意味を持っているのか分かりません。 次に Whoever has to deal with young children soon learns that too much sympathy is a mistake. Too little sympathy is of course, a worse mistake. But in this, as in everything else, each extreme is bad. A child that invariably receives sympathy will continue to cry over tiny mishap; the ordinary self-control of the adult is only achieved through knowledge that no sympathy will be won by making a fuss.という英文です。mishapまではスラスラと意味が理解できるのですが、それ以下の英文、何がどんな風になればどうなるのか、言わんとしていることが理解できません。making a fussをどういう意味にとればいいのか解りません。子供を「ちやほやする」でtoo much sympathy と同じなのか、それとも別のことを言ってるのかよく解りません。どなたか解り易く教えていただけませんか。宜しくお願いします。
