He had slate grey eyes, and they had seen a thousand sunrises on a hundred worlds." この文の中で「He had slate grey eyes」という部分がよくわかりません。 slateを辞書で調べると「石板」や「負債」などの名詞としての意味が出てきますが、上記の文章にうまくマッチしません。 「20歳にも50歳にも見える(目の部分以外は）。彼は...の灰色の目を持っている。百の世界で1000の日の出を見た。」というような意味のようですが「...」の部分がよくわかりません。

タイトルにした英文は下記の文章の中の一節です。 No sooner had he blown out the candle and set it on the floor at his side than he settled himself comfortably in the armchair,leaned back and closed his eyes, hoping and expecting to sleep. In this he was disappointed; never in his life had he felt less sleepy,and in a few minutes he gave up the attempt. タイトルにした「 never in his life had he felt less sleepy」の部分がよく分かりません。要するに、「この時が一番眠くなかった」んですか？他の部分は頭がこんがらがることもなく理解できるんですが、形容詞のless という語が使われると「眠いのか眠くないのか一体どっちなんだい？」と頭がこんがらがります。倒置には別にこんがらがりません。前後の文章から類推は出来るのですが、この文章そのものをサッと理解出来るいい方法はないものでしょうか？ more+形容詞は理解しやすいですが、less+形容詞の表現が日本語にはないから理解しにくいのでしょうね。何かサッと理解できるようになる妙案はないでしょうか？ 宜しくお願い致します。

今、英会話スクールでの予習で 訳してるのですが 難しくて困っています。 次のような内容です。 He has to wait in anothe long line to have an eye examination. この文なのですが 自分で訳してみると 「彼は試験をうけるため、長い列で待たなくてはいけない」 だと思うのですが、 examinationの前にeyeがついてるのが きになるのです。 調べてみても「目」とでてくるばかり。 注目の という意味もあるようですが 注目の試験？と、少し疑問なんです。 どうしたらいいでしょう・・・？

こんにちは！ 'Harry Potter and the goblet of fire (UK、アダルト版)' p.178の上の方の一文に関してですが 'But if the Improper Use of Magic lot get their hands on Mad-Eye, he's had it ...' この文は、なぜ下記のような日本語訳になるのでしょうか？ '『魔法不適正使用取締局』がマッド‐アイを捕まえたらおしまいだ...' 「he's had it」が「おしまいだ」にあたると思うのですが、なぜそうなるのかわかりません。 「he's had it」は「he has had it」で「have it」が「おしまいだ」的な意味になるかと思うのですが、「have it」に「おしまいだ」というような意味があるのでしょうか？ おしえてください。 よろしくお願いします。

次の文章を英訳する場合、どちらの方がより自然な訳でしょうか。 「○○（名前）は、グレーの目をしたクリーム色のむく毛の犬だった」 (1)○○ was a shaggy dog which had gray eyes and cream-colored coat.
