中２の英語の教科書で、指示代名詞についての質問です

次の文中で、彼が That を使って答えているのはなぜですか？ It ではないのですか？ （中２の英語の教科書です。） Near the end of the day, I found a strange rock. When I found it, Mr Oka was walkning nearby. I asked him, "What's this?" He said, "That's an old shell. Our town was under water long ago."

この用法は真似をしない方がいいと思います。It を使うべきでしょう。特に中２という学習初期段階では避けるべきでしょう。 shell のような小さいものが何なのかを確かめるためには、近くを歩いていた岡先生は、近づいて手に取ったはずです。手にshell を持ったままで That を使うのは不自然だと思うのです。 近づかなくても shell だと分かるほど明白なら What? と尋ねることもないでしょう。 つまり机上で作文しただけの文であり、矛盾が多いと言えます。

ご回答ありがとうございます。 そうですか、やはりitでしょうか。 教科書本文ですので、何かきちんとしたルールにのっとったものがあるのかと思いましたが…。
