The diversity is so great that scientists have, until now, succeeded in studying less than one percent of the species living there. The diversity is so great that ⇒副詞節 scientists ⇒S have … succeeded ⇒V in studying less than one percent of the species living there ⇒副詞句 というふうに考えたのですが・・・ 実際はどうなっているのでしょうか?

The diversity ⇒S is ⇒V great ⇒C that 以下 ⇒副詞句 (great を修飾するための副詞句。 The diversity is so great 多様性はそれほど大きい ※生物多様性のことです ※「それほど」がどの程度なのかは that の後で説明があります。 研究を引き継いだ less than one percent ※上と繋ぐと「引き継いだものは1%に満たない」 1%に満たない of the species living there.

He is so great that he has been respected by many people.

Biodiversity is important in two respects.. First, biodiversity prevents sudden food crisis. Diversity of a species means that it is strong enough to survive. Suppose that we grow genetically same crops made by the clone technology. If one crop gets ill, the other crops will also get ill because they are genetically the same. This may lead to extinction of the whole species and we will face a world-wide food crisis. Second, biodiversity will leave us the possibility of curing for some serious diseases. Scientists have only succeeded in studying less than one percent of species of plants, animals and insects living on the earth though there are more than 10 million of them. The diversity is so great. But they are on the verge of extinction. We must preserve them because there are possibilities that we will find new kinds of medicine among these unknown species with which we will be able to treat incurable diseases such as cancer, AIDS and so on. We have to prevent these living matters from dying out before we find them.

The chateau into which my valet had ventured to make forcible entrance, rather than permit me, in my desperately wounded condition, to pass a night in the open air, was one of those piles of commingled gloom and grandeur which have so long frowned among the Apennines, not less in fact than in the fancy of Mrs. Radcliffe.

There is a dotted outline for every person, larger than he or she is, of the person they could be, or could have been . Hardly anyone fills up their outline— perhaps it is impossible , and no one does. And we mean not just fame and achievement and success— but wisdom, character, honor, integrity, generosity, humility, goodness, heart, and so on. Few achieve it— we are destined as people to fall short. *この英文の前半の最初の構造はどうなっているのでしょうか?↓ There is a dotted outline for every person, larger than he or she is, of the person they could be, or could have been . larger than he or she isを外して考えて There is a dotted outline for every person of the person they could be, or could have been . そうなると every person of the person they could be,となるのは変な感じなのですが。 それから of the person they could beのpersonとtheyの間は関係代名詞が省略されているのでしょうか? *後半のFew achieve itのitは何を指しているのでしょうか? wisdom, character, honor, integrity, generosity, humility, goodness, heart, and so onを指しているようにも思うのですが、単数のitで受けているのでよくわかりません。

The most rapid growth in energy consumption now occurs in developing countries. As they seek to industrialize, raise standards of living and accommodate population growth, the less developed countries must expend more energy. Between 1980 and 1985, population in less developed countries grew by 11 percent and energy consumption grew by 22 percent;corresponding numbers for the industrialized world were 3 and 5 percent. Even SO, less developed countries still consume four to seven times less energy per person than do the industrialized countries.

West Germans work less than any of their European counterparts, let alone those in North America and the Far East. It's not so much that West German workers kill time on the job, rather it's that they are on the job less than workers anywhere els.
