文法書の問題の解答について解説ください。
友人に休日の様子について聞く質問文を穴埋めする問題を解いていて、解答について２つ疑問ができました。 以下、問題の抜き出しです。 Hi. how are things? -Fine, thanks. I've just had a great holiday. Where did you go? -To the U.S. We went on a trip from San Francisco to Denver. How _________________________? By car? - Yes, we hired a car in San Francisco. It's a long way to drive. How long did it take to get to Denver? Two weeks. Where _______________________? In hotels? -Yes, small hotels or motels. ..... まず１つめの空欄ですが、解答は How did you go? とされています。 僕はgoの後にthereもつけたのですがそれでも文として問題ありませんか？ そして２つめですが、解答は Where did you stay?となっています。 これ見て思ったのですが、where～stay in? や Where ～stay at? は変ですか？ふつう前置詞はつけませんか？ 他に例えば、where did they go? と where did they go to?も何が違うのですか？ 質問が下手で悪いのですが、これについて解答お願いします。

★僕はgoの後にthereもつけたのですがそれでも文として問題ありませんか？ →私ならやりません。 直前の文がWe went on a trip to Denver. なら、thereがあってもなくても、どちらもいいでしょう。 しかし、 We went on a trip from San Francisco to Denver.となると、 thereが指すのがto Denverのような気もしますが、まてよto Sanfrancscoもあるかな？あるいは全行程かな？って迷いますよね。thereは具体的な場所を指してしまっているので、1箇所かなとまず思い、それはどこかと迷いそうなので、そのちょっとした迷いを与える表現は使いたくありません。 ★これ見て思ったのですが、where～stay in? や Where ～stay at? は変ですか？ふつう前置詞はつけませんか？他に例えば、where did they go? と where did they go to?も何が違うのですか？ →変です。 Whereは副詞です。 Where did you stay? I stayed at a hotel. のようになります。 Where did you stay? I stayed in a hotel. where, there, here（つづりが似てますね）は副詞ですので、普通where did you stayの後には前置詞をつけることはしません。（例外は、意味を明確化するためにつけることがある） 私が他の人の質問でこの点で答えていますのでご覧下さい。↓ http://okwave.jp/qa/q7802238.html ◎Where did you stay? →stayという動詞を使うとtoは使いません。stayed in/atなどを使います。 ◎Where did you go? →I went to Denver. 逆にgoという動詞は普通toを使って、このように答えますが、where did you go to?とは言えません。whereが副詞だからtoの意味が含まれています。to Denverが2語で副詞句になります。 以上、ご参考になればと思います。

１つ目空欄で"How did you go there?"としても，Denverに行くことについての認識で相手が聞いていれば問題ないとは思いますが，どうにも，the USにどうやって行ったかに聞こえてしまいます また，他の２つの場所（San Francisco & Denver）についてもfrom - to となっているので，thereという（特定の場所を表す）表現がやや不自然な気がします How did you go? で "How did you go (on a trip from San Francisco to Denver.)?"の認識になるはずですから ということで，thereはない方がいいと思います ＞where～stay in? や Where ～stay at? は変ですか？ふつう前置詞はつけませんか？ そうですね 普通はつけません

一つ目は問題ありません。しかし、ない方がリズムが良さそうです。 二つ目は変になります。前置詞は不要です。 where は in, at, to , on などの前置詞が含まれた語だと考えてください。when も同じように考えてください。

会話文で"About two hours and twenty minutes."と答えているのに対する自由英作で"How long did you take Shinkansen from Nagoya to Hiroshima?"は間違った文章でしょうか？模範解答は"How long did it take?"なのですが「ＡからＢまでどのくらい新幹線に乗っていたのですか」と聞きたかったのでそういう文章を作ったと言うのですが。takeとlongを使って自由に作る文章なのでこれでもいいような気がするし、なんか違和感があるような気もするし。どなたか教えていただけますか

解答ありがとうございます。 確かに言われるとthereがあるとわかりにくい感じがしました。とても納得のいく説明でした。 ２つ目の話ですが、例文検索で Where did they go to?(みんなどこへいくんだろう）I wonder where did he go to?（彼はどこへ行ったのかな）という文をあらかじめ見つけたのですが、２文とも日本語訳からしておそらく、おっしゃられている"意味を明確にするための例外"に当たるものだと思います。これについても大変納得できました。 とても助かりました。
