このＢさんの答えは完全に狂っています。 Ａさんは、これはＸだけに使うもの、それともＹでも使えるの？ と聞いているのに、どうして、barking up the tree になるのですか？ 答えになっていません。 それに、barking up the right tree というような表現はしません。bark up はイヌが木に登った獲物に吠えついているのだから、基本的に間違っている場合に 「見当違いだよ」と言う意味で、you are barking up the wrong tree と言うのです。 大当たり、と言いたいならまさに you hit the nail on the head ですよ。
補足
回答ありがとうございます。 カナダのNational Public Radioの記事なので、文章が間違っているというのはおかしいと思います。

よろしくお願いします。 中学一年生の形容詞と副詞の範囲です。 That is a tall tree. を That tree is tall. というように意味を同じで、書き換える問題です。 一方、 You teach English well. は、 You are a good English teacher. となるのですが、 このwell がgood になることへの説明がうまくしてあげられません。 You are a well English teacher. では、なぜなのかというのです。 おそらく、意味ではなく、品詞の問題ではないかと思い、 well goodの品詞を調べたのですが、 wellにも形容詞としての用法がありました。 が、よくわかりません。。 どなたかわかるかた、どうしてwell ENglish teacher ではだめなのか教えてください。 よろしくおねがいしますｌ。
