Ten times as many soldiers had died of illness as from battle wounds. このような"as ～ as"構文の最初の"as"は「同じくらいの」という副詞、あとの"as"は「～と比べて」という接続詞です。英語の接続詞は、基本的には文と文をつなぐ働きをします。ですからもとの２つの文を作り出せばいいのですよ。 １）Soldiers had died of illness.「兵士たちは病気で死んでいた。」 ２）Soldiers had died from battle wounds.「兵士たちは戦場の傷がもとで死んでいた。」 が元の２つの文です。 どこを比較しているかと言うと、"soldiers"の数です。１）の兵士の数が２）の１０倍ということですから、"ten times as many solders"を１）の先頭にくっつけます。 ３）Ten times as many soldiers had died of illness.となります。 そして、２）の文を結びつけるために、２）の先頭に接続詞"as"をくっつけます。 ４）as soldiers had died from battle wounds.となります。 ３）と４）をくっつけると次の５）になります。 ５）Ten times as many soldiers had died of illness as soldiers had died from battle wounds. 英語は同じ語句はなるべく省略することになっています。出てきた同じ語句のあとのものをカッコでくくると６）になります。 ６）Ten times as many soldiers had died of illness as (soldiers) (had died) from battle wounds. このカッコの部分を省略すると、本文になるのです。 Ten times as many soldiers had died of illness as from battle wounds. ＞主語と述語がどれかわかりません。 →お分かりのように、接続詞がありますので、隠れた主語・述語を含めると同じものが１ペア、２つずつあるということになります。 (S)＝soldiers (V)＝had died ＞どう訳したらいいですか？ 「戦場の傷がもとで死んでいた兵士の１０倍の兵士が病気で死んでいた。」 ＞また、同じ意味で他にも言い方はありますか？ →たくさんあります。ここでは掲げるには多すぎます。しかし比較は基本的にはこの説明どおりの規則で機能しています。"than"の文も同じです。日本語と違って、非常に機械的にできていますので、もとの２つの英文をご自分で作られたら、お分かりになると思います。

主語：ｓｏｌｄｉｅｒｓ 述語：ｈａｄ ｄｉｅｄ 戦死者（負傷による）の１０倍の兵士が病気で死んだということでしょう。

主語はmany soldiers 動詞はhad died でしょうか。 ぶつ切り直訳法とかダメですかね。 １０倍、多くのソルジャー、死んだ、病気、戦争woundsで。 なんとなくのニュアンスがわかればいいんであれば。 時々誤解しますが。 ちなみにwoundsは傷だそうです。

重力と張力に関係する文章中に、 A wet fly has to lift many times its own weight. という文があったのですが、many times の意味がわかりません。 自分としては、「濡れたハエは自分の体重を何度も持ち上げなければならない。」だと思うのですが、many timesの位置が微妙なので、 「何倍も」と訳すのか、だけどそれだとas many times as～となるではないか・・・よくわかりません。教えてください。 実は先日、この文章に関する別の質問（No.2492701）をさせていただきましたが、またわからないことがあったので今回投稿しました。
