英文の意味を教えて下さい
はじめまして、 アメリカに留学して１年経ち、現在取ってるPhilosophy(哲学) classで paperを書くのですが、topicの内容をいまいちハッキリ把握できずに困っています。 以下が与えられたtopicです Socrates said that the unexamined life is not worth living for human being. Does that strike you as a reasonable assertion? Is there any way to know whether or not an "unexamined" life is worth living except by "examining" it? In other words, can we make any reasonable claims about the quality of an unexamined life＿or an unexamined anything? 私の解釈だと、辛くない人生に価値はない、というソクラテスの主張を 証明できるか、とか聞かれてる気がするんですけど、あってるでしょうか。 和訳ではなく、この質問の意味を教えて欲しいです。 そしてもし日本語でも哲学に詳しい方で この主張を知ってる方がいらっしゃったら、 この質問に対する考えをお聞きしたいです。 よろしくお願いします。

他の方がすでに回答しているところ、申し訳ございませんが、私はlifeという言葉に惹きつけられましたので、あえて書いてみました。あのソクラテスが述べたということですので、含蓄があるのだろうと思いますが、哲学に全く造形のない者が英文だけの字面から訳しますと以下のような解釈となります。 ソクラテスが言うには生きるべきか死ぬべきか検討も加えたこともないような人生は人にとって生きるに値しない。 このような発言は人にとってその通りと思える主張だと心にひびきますか。 すでに生きるべきか死すべきか検討された人生を除いて、生きるべきか死すべきか検討がなされていない人生が生きるに値するか否かを知る方法がありますか。 言い換えれば、生きるべきか死ぬべきか検討されていない人生について＿＿あるいはそれが存在すべきかすべきでないのか検討されていない何かについても、私どもはなにか道理にかなった要求や主張をなすことが出来ますか。 （訳者注：つまり究極の判断を人生においてもあるいは他の物事に付いてもしていないならば、私どもにはたいした主張も要求もできないのではないかというのがソクラテスの主張ではないかとおもいます）。

回答ありがとうございました。 translationは多くの誤解や意味の欠落を生むので 回答は 和訳でなく 意味 に重点を置かせてもらいました。 私の説明不足だったのですが、 ソクラテスが重視していたものはpyche（soul/mind)であり 彼が言いたかったexamined lifeとは philosophical な考え方や考察だったようです。 なので、生きる価値や死ぬ価値、とは少し違いましたが topicの意味を組み取るのに参考にさせてもらいました。 ありがとうございます。

鍵は unexamined 「未審査の「未検査の」ですね。この文で４回出て来ます。 http://eow.alc.co.jp/unexamined/UTF-8/ 「辛くない」とはちょっと違うような気がします。
補足
日本語に訳してしまうと、どうも意味が読取りづらくなります。 ソクラテス本人が意味するunexamined lifeとは、unconscious lifeだそうです。 そしてこの "The unexamined life is not worth living."に対してはこう書かれています "...among another things, that a life devoid of philosophical speculation is hardly a human life. that is, it is incomplete; it is fully functioning and so lacks virtue or excellence." ソクラテスの求めるexamineとは、virtueとexcellenceを指している気がします。
