The New Democrats in the US and New Labour were close, having been initiated well before 1997. They involved the exchange of ideas - but Blair and his advisers also made a study of the techniques of persuasion and media management that the New Democrats had been developing in the US. These were eventually to rebound on their founders, and tended to produce public distaste.

  • (252)They loved……

QA252 They loved the lamentable works of Ares and deeds of violence; they ate no bread, but were hard of heart like adamant, fearful men. Great was their strength and unconquerable the arms which grew from their shoulders on their strong limbs. Their armour was of bronze, and their houses of bronze, and of bronze were their implements: there was no black iron. These were destroyed by their own hands and passed to the dank house of chill Hades, and left no name: terrible though they were, black Death seized them, and they left the bright light of the sun. They loved the lamentable works of Ares. but were hard of heart like adamant, fearful men. Great was their strength and unconquerable the arms……. 彼らの鎧は青銅製であり、家も青銅製their houses of bronze かつ、それらの家具も青銅製でand of bronze were their implements、 そこに黒い鉄で作られたものはなかった。There was not Black Iron. (1)They loved the lamentable works of Aresについて このworksは名詞で、「仕事ぶり」(様子)しました。 (2)but were hard of heart like adamant, fearful menについて <断固とした、恐ろしい人間のように、心の冷酷さがある>としました。 (3)from their shoulders on their strong limbs について このonは「彼らの手足の上にくっついた」意味で、「支える」としました。 (4)Great was their strength and unconquerable the arms. Great was their A and B (of) the armsと 考え、Greatなのはarmsではなく、Aであり、B of the armsとしました。 (3)their houses of bronzeについて この文は(was)の省略と思われ、their houses (was) of bronze と 挿入しました。 (4)their houses of bronzeについて これもtheir houses (was) of bronzeと挿入 (5)terrible though they were について これはthough they were terribleと倒置 *black Death;これはNyxの子タナトス、ケール(死の命運)とは違う。 *they ate no bread;彼らはパン(食事)をしない。(神のことだからあり得る) *These were destroyed by their own hands;彼らが壊した(理由不明)

A new wall of darkness, more impregnable than China's great wall of stone, stood between the Far East and Occident. Marco's millions were memory now. On over seventy pages of The Book of Marco Polo he made notes; and he decided to sail west. And so, with three small ships, a crew mostly of convicts, and the inspiration of the Venetian traveler, Columbus discovered America. So long as the main trade routes to the East were overland, Venice and Genoa had held their keys. But now, ahead, lay drama and daring and the quickpulse of a new race.

German resistance was fierce and when the offensive was called off on 17 May, few of the initial objectives had been met. The Australians were in possession of much of the German trench system between Bullecourt and Riencourt-lès-Cagnicourt but had been unable to capture Hendecourt. To the west, British troops managed to push the Germans out of Bullecourt but incurred considerable losses, failing also to advance north-east to Hendecourt. By the standards of the Western front, the gains of the first two days were nothing short of spectacular. A great deal of ground was gained for relatively few casualties and a number of strategically significant points were captured, notably Vimy Ridge. Additionally, the offensive succeeded in drawing German troops away from the French offensive in the Aisne sector. In many respects, the battle might be deemed a victory for the British and their allies but these gains were offset by high casualties and the ultimate failure of the French offensive at the Aisne. By the end of the offensive, the British had suffered more than 150,000 casualties and gained little ground since the first day. Despite significant early gains, they were unable to effect a breakthrough and the situation reverted to stalemate.

To understand Omphalos, we must begin with a paradox. The argument that strata and fossils were created all at once with the earth, and only present an illusion of elapsed time, might be easier to appreciate if its author had been an urban armchair theologian with no feeling or affection for nature's works. But how could a keen naturalist, who had spent days, nay months, on geological excursions, and who had studied fossils hour after hour, learning their distinctions and memorizing their names, possibly be content with the prospect that these objects of his devoted attention had never existed--were, indeed, a kind of grand joke perpetrated upon us by the Lord of All? The major British assault of the first day was directly east of Arras, with the 12th Division attacking Observation Ridge, north of the Arras—Cambrai road. After reaching this objective, they were to push on towards Feuchy, as well as the second and third lines of German trenches. At the same time, elements of the 3rd Division began an assault south of the road, with the taking of Devil's Wood, Tilloy-lès-Mofflaines and the Bois des Boeufs as their initial objectives. The ultimate objective of these assaults was the Monchyriegel, a trench running between Wancourt and Feuchy, and an important component of the German defences. Most of these objectives, including Feuchy village, had been achieved by the evening of 10 April though the Germans were still in control of large sections of the trenches between Wancourt and Feuchy, particularly in the area of the heavily fortified village of Neuville-Vitasse. The following day, troops from the 56th Division were able to force the Germans out of the village, although the Monchyriegel was not fully in British hands until a few days later.

The use of this technique characterizes another major new building, the Forum Baths. Situated in the block immediately to the north of the Capitoline temple, these represented a state-of the-art project incorporating not just bathing facilities but also shops and upstairs apartments, and were clearly intended as an amenity for the general population, among whom the bathing habit had taken a firm hold, rather than for the colonists alone. Significantly, a pair of inscriptions which have been ascribed to the Forum Baths records the magistrates who supervised the work as operating at public expense rather than paying from their own pockets. Evidently the Stabian Baths were now inadequate to the requirements of the city, and a new establishment was needed to relieve pressure on them. At the same time the Stabian Baths themselves were modernized, as an inscription reveals, by the addition of a laconiun and destrictarium (room for rubbing down after exercise) and by the reconstruction of the Bath’s palaestra and its porticoes.

At the start of 1916, most of the British Army had been an inexperienced and patchily trained mass of volunteers. The Somme was the debut of the Kitchener Army created by Lord Kitchener's call for recruits at the start of the war. The British volunteers were often the fittest, most enthusiastic and best educated citizens but British casualties were also inexperienced soldiers and it has been claimed that their loss was of lesser military significance than the losses of the remaining peace-trained officers and men of the German army. British casualties on the first day were the worst in the history of the British army, with 57,470 British casualties, 19,240 of whom were killed. British survivors of the battle had gained experience and the BEF learned how to conduct the mass industrial warfare, which the continental armies had been fighting since 1914.

The Germans secured the appointment of Lieutenant-General Erich Weber as an advisor to the Ottoman GHQ and at the end of August 1914, Vice-Admiral Guido von Usedom, several specialists and 500 men were sent to reinforce the forts on the Dardanelles and Bosphorus. In September, Usedom was made Inspector-General of Coast Defences and Mines and Vice-Admiral Johannes Merten relieved Weber at Chanak with a marine detachment to operate the modern guns. By mid-September, the German advisers reported that the guns in the Narrows had been refurbished and were serviceable. By October, most of the guns in the main batteries had German crews, operating as training units but able to man the guns in an emergency. Plans were made to build more defensive works in the Intermediate Zone and to bring in mobile howitzers and quick-firers dismounted from older Ottoman ships. Several heavy howitzers arrived in October but the poor standard of training of the Ottoman gunners, obsolete armaments and the chronic ammunition shortage, which Usedom reported was sufficient only to defend against one serious attack, led him to base the defence of the straits on minefields. Three more lines of mines had been laid before Usedom arrived and another 145 mines were searched out, serviced and laid in early November. Cover of the minefields was increased with small quick-firers and four more searchlights. by March 1915, there were ten lines of mines and 12 searchlights. When the Ottoman Empire went to war on 29 October 1914, the defences of the Straits had been much improved but the Intermediate Defences were still inadequately organised and lacking in guns, searchlights and mines. On 3 November, the outer forts were bombarded by Allied ships, which galvanised the Ottoman defenders into reducing their obstructionism against the German advisers. The fortress commander, Jevad Pasha, wrote later that he had to improve the defences at all costs. The short bombardment had been extraordinarily successful, destroying the forts at Sedd el Bahr with two shots, that exploded the magazine and dismounted the guns. The Ottoman and German defenders concluded that the Outer Defences could be demolished by ships firing from beyond the range of the Ottoman reply. The forts were repaired but not reinforced and the main effort was directed to protecting the minefield and Inner Defences.

It is therefore possible that another lost poem, the "Idaean Dactyls", which dealt with the discovery of metals and their working, was appended to, or even was a part of the "Great Works", just as the "Divination by Birds" was appended to the "Works and Days". is suspected that both CURETES and CORYBANTES were offspring of the Idaean DACTYLS.
