be about to の解釈、言葉的にはそれで問題ないと思うのですが、ニュアンスの受け止め方がちょいとずれているような気がします。次の説明の一番下の方に、そこらへんの説明があります。 http://www.excite.co.jp/dictionary/english_japanese/?search=about&match=beginswith&dictionary=NEW_EJJE&block=34418&offset=502&title=about be to do は、～することになっている、という感じの、ほどんど確定した予定を示しますが、 be about to do は、その目的地あたりにきている、最終局面に入っている、という感じでしょうか。

みなさんこんにちは。 「be supposed to」の使い方を教えて下さい。 英英辞典も一応調べてみました。 A: 「expected or required by custom, law, duty, or personal obligation」 B: 「(in the negative) not allowed to」 と、これらの意味（使い方）は解るのですが、日本語では、「be supposed to」を使うようなニュアンスの言い回しをする場面が無いように思われ、どういうニュアンスを出したい時に、「be supposed to」を使えば良いのかが、良く解りません。 「should」を使った場合との意味の違い、という質問もあるのですが、One question at a time という事で、今回は、下記のような使い方の違いに付いてお願いします。 あまり良い例ではないかも知れないですが、 「What does it mean?」と言うのと、「What is it supposed to mean?」と言うのでは、どうニュアンスが違うのですか？ 誰かが書いてる絵を見て、 「Is that a train?」と聞くのと、「Is that supposed to be a train?」と聞くのとでは、どう違うのですか？ こういった微妙？な、「be supposed to」の出すニュアンスを教えて下さい。 よろしくお願いします。

次の英文の『』部分の訳が欲しいです。 『 The thing, above all, that a teacher should endeavour to produce in his pupils if democracy is to survive, 』 is the kind of tolerance that springs from an endeavour to understand those who are different from ourselves. 細かく言うと“if democracy is to survive”の部分をどう訳したらいいか分かりません。 be to 不定詞だと思うのですが、どの訳を入れてもしっくりこず・・・ あるいは“if ～ be to Ｖ”で決まった訳があるのでしょうか。 どなたか英語に強い方、お願いします。

Meaning of "be supposed to". Be supposed toの意味をきちんとわかりたいのですが、よろしくおねがいします。調べたところによると、supposed toは ある掲示板でこう説明されていました。 ↓ Question. 今日テキストを見ていたらこういう例文がありました！ I belive his proposal to be very practical. （彼の提案はすごく現実的だと思う。） というセンテンスなのですが、このto beというところにちょっと違和感を感じたのですが、この場合もし I belive his proposal is very practical. と言ったら文法的に間違えなのでしょうか？もしくは I belive that his proposal is very practical.などは可能なのでしょうか？
