これはＥＳＬの人たちの教材だそうです。 アラスジ ポール・モリスの妻が突然死した時に、彼のイタリヤでの幸せな生活が変わった。 彼と同じ勤務先のサンドラとの交際が発展した。しかし全てが期待通りに行ったわけではない。 どうしてサンドラはあのような高級車を買うことが出来るのだろうか？ そして何故彼女は謎めいた電話を度々かけるのであろうか？ 間もなくポールは国際犯罪事件に巻き込まれて、ヨーロッパ中をスリルのあるカーチェイスすることになる。 ご参考まで

- "matter"は「物質」ですか？
"We have explored the terrible jungles of matter, and we have emerged with the power of the exploding sun." "jungles of matter" が出てきますが、「物質のジャングル（比ゆ的）」なのか、「重要な（大事な）ジャングル」（こちらは比ゆ的ではなく本物のジャングル）なのか解釈に悩みます。どっちが正しいのか教えてください。

- chance of recovery / recovering ?
とある大学の入試問題を解いていたのですが、適切な語を選ぶ問題で Her only chance of ( ) appeard to be ... という文のカッコに入るのは recovery か recovering かを選ばせるものがありました。 文法上はどちらも可能だと思って調べましたが、chance of recovery という 言い方のほうがどうもお決まりの言い方らしいことしか分かりませんでした。 chance of ...ing という形は普通に見られるようですし、 これは recovering のほうが不自然だということでいいのでしょうか。

All through the summer , no matter what time of the day I went to the store, I would find him sitting there on the porch steps. こういう文があったのですが、確かno matter what＝whateverだからあとには不完全な文がこないといけなかったと思います。 no matter what time of the day＝whenever なのでしょうか？

今日のCNN international版にウクライナのマレーシア航空機撃墜に関連してVladimir Putin's big blunderと題した記事の中に War is the province of chance.という言葉が出できます。200～３００年前のプロセインの軍人の言葉らしいのですが、provinceもchanceもいろいろ意味がありこの文の意味がなかなか頭に入りません。どなたか説明していただけませんでしょうか。下はその文が出てくる箇所です。 ……… It remains possible that the investigation will fail to reach any strong conclusions, leaving Putin some wiggle room. - 「A Matter of Goblins」という本の「kink in time」という単語について教えてください。
ネットに載っていた「A Matter of Goblins」という本を読んでいたのですが、その中で「kink in time」という単語がでてきたのですが、どうしても意味がわかりません。詳しく知っている方がいましたら訳し方を教えてください。ちなみに原文は「Richard poole,was an actor.It seemed very probable that the old legend connected with his house had prompted him to organise what he conceived to be an appropriate entertainment there for his feriends.This was at least a more tenable theory than Mr Butterys of a kink in time.」という文です。その中の「 kink in time」の訳だけおしえてください。おねがいします。
