had been abondoned and maintained ～ のように関係代名詞 who の後，had been abandoned and maintained ～とつながっています。 先行詞は children で「棄てられ，人間と離れて森で自活した」子供たちが見つけられた（→見つかった）時」 apart from other human beings で「他の人間と離れて」 maintained themselves「自活した」という動詞にかかるとも， forests にかかり，「人里離れた森」とも考えられます。 apart は副詞といっても apart from ～で一種の前置詞句のようなものですので，直前の名詞にかかるということも可能です。

People experience themselves and the world in ways that are highly distressing to them and/or impair their ability to function in daily life. １）in ways thatがうまくやくせません。 そのやり方で、その方法で、という訳でthat以下を修飾し、前節(people～world）にかかるというのは、以前の質問でわかるようになりました。 が、返り読みのような形になってしまい、苦痛です。 慣れてしまえば文節ごとに区切り、頭の中で再構成する事も出来ると思うのですが、その域にも達していません。 少し話がズレますが、私は前置詞+whichの英文を訳す際に、とにかく先行詞で切って、そして「それを通して」とか「それの中で」と続けていくようにしています。 これと同じような感覚で、in way that～を前から読んでいって、その中で理解するような方法はないでしょうか。 出来る限り前から訳す努力をしたんですが、 「人々は自分自身や世の中を体験する、そのやり方で。自分自身を強く苦しめるし、また、もしくは日常生活を送る能力を損なうという。」という形になりました。 ちょっとおかしいですね…。 ２）今回に限った話ではないですが、 andが出てきたときに、どこまでが修飾範囲なのか悩むことがおおいです。 具体的には、themselves and the world は、in ways thatでくくっていいのか？ are highly～と、impair～は、that節でひとくくりにして、in waysに代入していいのか？などです。 やはり柔軟にその都度考えていくしかありませんか？ 例えば代名詞theirが直前の複数名詞に当てはまる事が多いように、何か一定の決まりごとのようなものはありませんか？ ちょっと都合のいい質問かもしれませんが、宜しくお願い致します。
