短文の部分訳
携帯版英治郎から。気になってる文です。 １．Joice Heth was reputed to be over 160 years old , and to have served as George Washington nurse over 160 years old って何かの比喩ですか？ Joice Hethって人間？ ２、The considerable degree to which man's propensity for social living is shred by other animal forms is not generally realized. degreeのうまい訳仕方。それと構文ですが The considerable degree が Ｓで toからformsまでが「」で is realized が V ですね。 ３、The book stars off boring , but it gets better and better as you go. stars off boring と go の対処法教えてください。

１．No1さんの参考URLによりますと、160歳以上と宣伝することによる客集めのためではないでしょうか。この方法ではだめになったので次に考えたのが人間ではないと言ううわさもPRのためではないでしょうか。ただ、1836年に死んだって書いていますので、結果的にはどっちでしょうか。 ２．to a degreeと言う熟語です。そこに強意としてconsiderableが付いただけです。 man's propensity for social living is shred by other animal forms to the considerable degree 直訳すれば、社会生活の人間の傾向はかなりの程、他の動物の形によって、ちぎられる。 人間らしく生きるかどうかでなく、動物の形をしているだけで、みんなの見方も変わるとかの意味でしょうか。 SVの関係はご指摘のとおりです。 ３．The book is boring.だと、その本はつまらない。 そこに、start off になっている。 たぶん、go on readingの意味でしょう。 参考になったら光栄です。

1. Joice Hethは人間で、アメリカで奴隷だった女性です。nurseというのは看護婦さんではなく、乳母というような意味です。で、文章を訳すと、「Joice Hethは160歳以上まで生きたとされており、またジョージ・ワシントンの乳母（注）でもあった。」てな感じでしょうか。 実際にお乳をあげていたかは知りませんが。（乳母っていうとお乳あげる人ですから。どちらかというとベビーシッター的な役割かもしれませんね。） ２．と３．はNo1さんが的確な訳をされています。

1. 見世物で展示（っていうのかな？）されていた人（からくり人形？）の名前らしいです。(参考URLをご覧ください） 日本でも、縁日の出し物で蛇女とかありますよね。あの類だと思います。 2. 人間が社会生活を指向する傾向が、どれくらい他の動物の（行動）様式にも共有されているかは、一般には認識されていない。("shred"のところは"shared"ですよね？) テストでなければ、もっと思い切って意訳した方が良いかもしれません。 3. その本は、最初はつまらないが、読み進むほどに、どんどん面白くなっていく。
