高校の英作問題です。

本当に正しくしようと思うと California has one-third as many poeple as Japan. とするしかありません。 これだと California という主語と Japan という主語を比べていることになります。 one-third で一語というのはいかがとも思いますが，他に書きようがありません。

No.1です。 迂闊にもカリフォルニアの人口が3分の1なのに３倍と錯覚起こしました。 従って上記の回答のmoreはless が正しいということになり California has three times less people than Japan と訂正しますm(__)m

最初にお考えになった英文は正しいように見えますが、カリフォルニアの「人口」と比較するのは日本の「人口」であって「日本」そのものではありません。従ってThe population of California is one -third of that of Japan.であるべきです。 問題の方はCalifornia has と主語になっていますので、日本の方もJapan （has）と主語になるはずです。それがこの問題のキーポイントだと思います。そう考えると最後のカッコ内はthan, そして前３つには（three times more)を入れて California has three times more people than Japan. というのは如何でしょう。 もしthriceという古風な語が許されるなら California has thrice as many people as Japan. というのも可能です。 i

早速のお助けありがとうございます。 この問題は高校のサブテキスト的問題集から出ており 答えそのものはないのですが 元々どういう文法事項から出題されているのかだけは わかりました。 「同格」の部分です。 one thirdを数字で書いて そこで一カッコ分だけ使えばできるような気がしてきました。 California has 1/3 as many people as Japan. これ、どうですかしら？

×The population of China is bigger than Japan. ○The population of China is bigger than that of Japan. というのは有名ですが、では Indian philosophy is more complicated than Greek philosophy. で2個目のphilosophyの繰り返しを避けるためにはどういえばいいでしょうか？ 可算名詞だったらone/onesが使えると思うのですが、不可算には使えないのですよね。

ありがとうございます。 この問題が「同格」を用いる単元から出ているのをみると as asを使うこの形が求められているような気がします。 カッコの数も合います。 それにしてもカッコの数に合わせる作文って・・・・（←グチです）
