the increased export volumes and decreased volume of imports exactly match the decreased earnings per unt of exports and increased expenditure per unit of imports so that the current balance is unchanged. Approximate elasticities sum to 0.9 which is close to unity. the increased volume of export sales and decreased volume of imports are sufficient to outweigh the price effects so that the current balance improves following a devaluation. Approximate elasticities sum to 1.65 which fulfils the critical Marshall-Lerner condition for a successful devaluation. A more complicated formula can be derived which allows for supply elasticities of exports and imports of less than infinity. Given the assumption of less than infinite supply elasticity conditions and assuming initially balances trade; namely, the balance of payments will improve following a devaluation if

This equation is known as the Marshall-Lerner condition and says that starting from a position of equilibrium in the current account, a devaluation will improve the current, that is dCA/dS >0 only if the sum of the foreign elasticity of demand for exports and the home country elasticity of demand for imports is greater than unity; that is, (nx+nm)>1. If the sum of these two elasticities is less than unity, then a devaluation will lead to a deterioration of the current account.

In the official report on the operations issued by the Government of India much stress was laid on "the intense heat, sand, and shortage of water", and "[t]he desertion of the camel-drivers and the severe climatic conditions so delayed and distressed the main body as to necessitate a withdrawal from Lahij". McKenzie notes that "we do not seem to have made such arrangements for transport and for water supply as would have prepared us for the difficulties which every experienced traveller knew we would have to face. . . But the severe heat of the climate, the potential treachery of hired Arabs, and the shortage of water were all of them factors which had been familiar from the beginning to the Indian authorities, and, one might suppose, ought to have been allowed for."

Laursen-Metzler effect(ラウルセン-メッツラー効果?) Laursen and Metzler(1950) noted that the deterioration in the terms of trade following a devaluation will have two effects on absorption. An income effect and a substitution effect. While the deterioration in the terms of trade lowers national income and thereby income-related absorption, it also makes domestically produced goods relatively cheaper compared to foreign produced goods, which implies a substitution effect in favour of increased consumption of domestically produced goods. If the positive substitution effect outweighs the negative income effect Laursen-Metzler noted that a devaluation which results in a deterioration of the terms of trade could actually lead to a rise in absorption.

the second shock was an economic shock and the direct result of a combination of american economic problem: a growing trade imbalance with japan and a dollar that had become too highly valued in the rest of the world. a package of economic policies was announced by president nixon in august that led to an immediate 10% reduction in the value of the dollar (which meant that japanese goods would be more expensive in the u.s) and a temporary 10% tax on imports. the shift in the japanese-american relationship was not only caused by the increased power of japan; america's dominant position in the world was also undergoing serious changes. the watergate scandals and the loss of the war in vietnam combined to cause the american people to lose faith in themselves and to question america's role as the leader of the western bloc. the oil crisis of 1973 added to this malaise by decreasing america's economic ability to support its overseas defense commitments. many congressmen questioned why the u.s was spending money to defend japan when it was increasingly obvious that increased japanese economic strength was one cause for the economic recession in the u.s.

It's one of the must-see attractions for visitors to London. Most tourists only get to look at the outside of the famous clock tower. But for a few thousand people a year who organise a tour of it, this is how it sounds on the inside... The clanking of the old machinery which operates the clock and those bongs. It can only be visited if it's arranged in advance by contacting a member of Parliament, usually only done by the small number of UK residents who are aware of it. But rather than those tours being free in future, there'll be a charge of fifteen pounds per person. House of Commons officials say it will simply cover the 111-thousand pounds a year it costs to provide the tours. But a group of disgruntled MPs argue that UK residents already pay through their taxes. They say Big Ben is a world-renowned symbol of British democracy, and visiting it should be free.

On 19 August the Fifth Army began to move into the angle of the Meuse and Sambre rivers close to Namur, which required a march of up to 100 kilometres (62 mi) and took the army far beyond the left flank of the Fourth Army. Opposite the French were the 2nd and 3rd armies, with 18 divisions against the 15 French divisions. The I Corps held the west bank of the Meuse from Givet to Namur, X Corps faced north-west along the Sambre, with the III Corps to the west opposite Charleroi and the XVIII Corps further to the left. French cavalry on the left flank skirmished with German cavalry on 20 August and next day Joffre ordered the Fifth Army to advance, with the BEF on the left to find and attack the German forces west of the Meuse.
