四国についての説明
四国について英語で書きたいのですが下記で合ってますか？お願いします。 Shikoku Island is the smallest one in four main islands in Japan. Shikoku は単独でいいのかもしくは、island か Islandのほうがいいのか？悩んでおります。 知り合いに聞いてみますと Manhattanの後のislandは省くが、Long Islandは必ずIslandとなるということです。 お手数ですが、宜しくお願いします。

参考までですが、 数年前の新潟の大地震がアメリカのＣＮＮで報道された時、…around Tokyo (東京のまわり)と報道されたと、カナダ人の在日英語講師から聞きました。彼に言わせると、日本は首都の東京と、その周囲の地域、くらいにしか見てないらしいです。大陸に住んでいる人から見ればそんなものなのか・・・と思えば納得できると思います。 よって、確かに固有名詞ですが、単にShikokuでは、日本地理に詳しくない人に伝えるのであれば、詳細の説明を加えた方が良いかと思います。

四国が島か島で無いかの国内での議論はともかく，世界に向けて発進する英語で考えてみますと、やはり島と言わざるを得ないと思います。 四国島とは言いませんが英作文の時は島と使わざるを得ない場合もあります。 日本列島というくらいですので。 それと、この場合の最上級にはは smallest の次に名詞か代名詞が置かれるべきだと思います。 なので、 Shikoku is the smallest one of four main(principal) islands in Japan. となると思います。 なお，１つのセンテンスの中に同じ言葉が重複するのは避けた方が良い（というか，ダメな英文）と思います。 そういう意味でご質問者が one を使ったのは良いアイディアだと思います。

国内の交通標識では、例えば（あくまで例えです）後楽園だと"Koraku-en Park"等となっていたりすることは珍しくないですが、この表現が的確だとは自分はとても思えません。後楽園に「園(park)」の意味は含まれていますし、なによりそんな呼び方する日本人なんてどこにもいませんから・・・。 国内の標準例に習えば"Shikoku Island"（四国島）となるのかもしれませんが、自分ならなるべく海外の人に間違った呼び名（これは断言していいでしょう）で伝わらないようそれは避け、かつ島だと解る表現をこころがけますね。例えば「the island "Shikoku"」とか・・。 ちなみに、英語wikiでも"Shikoku Island"とはされていないようです。 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shikoku これに習えば、 Shikoku is the smallest of the four main islands of Japan. ・・・となるのでしょうか。ご参考までに。

英訳をお願いします。 People sometimes refer to Manhattan as Manhattan island, for example. The opposite however would be true for Long Island, because the word is part of the full name of the island. 『例えば、人々は時々マンハッタンをマンハッタン島と呼ぶ』 ２文目から分かりません。 『however』を『the opposite』と 『would』の間にいれる意味についても教えていただけないでしょうか。 宜しくお願いします。
