Then, just as the teacher was beginning to think that as long as she was quiet she might just as well stay there, Totto-chan would suddenly call out to a passing band of garishly dressed street musicians. To Totto-chan's delight and the teacher's tribulation, the classroom was on the ground floor looking out on the street. There was only a low hedge in between, so anyone in the classroom could easily talk to people going by. When Totto-chan called to them, the street musicians would come right over to the window Whereupon, said the teacher, Totto-chan would announce the fact to the whole room, "Here they are." 「トットちゃんは教室の全員に『ほら見て』と知らせるんですよ」 and all the children would crowd by the window and call out to the musicians 「そして、子供たちは全員窓のところに集まって、ミュージシャンに呼びかけることになるのです」

Daigo also told me that when his class was going on a school trip, his teacher told the class to come to the school at 5:00 a.m. When he dutifully arrived at the still-dark school at the stated hour, no one, not even the teacher, was there. The U.S. students started to arrive before 6:00. The teacher herself arrived after 7:00. Most of the Venezuelan students arrived around 8:00, which was the "real" hour of departure. When Daigo asked the teacher why she did not say 8:00 to begin with, she replied, "If I said 8:00, no one would arrive before 10:00!" Strangely, the same students apparently arrived more or less on time to their classes. The rules of time are hard to fathom across cultures.

Wile he was still at high school, Mark went to a nearby university to take a programming course. The class was for graduate students. Edward took Mark into the classroom on the first day of the course. "You can't bring your son into the classroom with you," the teacher complained. "I'm not," replied Edward. "It's my son who's taking the class!" 1)The class was for graduate students. 2)"You can't bring your son into the classroom with you,"は「息子を連れてきてはいけませんよ。」

When not in use for drills and other displays, it would have been open to the general public as a pleasant intramural open space, analogous to the monumental porticus, such as the Porticus of Octavia and the Porticus of Livia, which the emperor created(in continuance of a Republican tradition) in the capital. It was provided with a central swimming pool and planted with plane trees whose estimated age at the time of the eruption is the chief argument for an Augustan date. The importance of the campus is attested by the fact that the space was obtained by suppressing six blocks of the pre-existing street-grid.
