文の構造がわかりません

素人の試訳ですが、ご参考になれば。 ファーガソンは「共分散分析」について、「試行的なものでなく、統計学的な立場に立った手法である。それは、１つもしくは複数の非制御変数を抑制あるいは調整するために用いられる」ものだ、と述べている。この場合は、事前に行われたアチーブメント・テスト結果の評価のことを言っている。

pretest は名詞で正しいです。 ただ，「事前テストのスコアにおける達成度の違い」でなく， 「達成の事前テストの得点における違い」であり， 「前もって，達成度を検査した得点の違い」 「得点」といっても，達成度の程度ということですので， 「前もって検査した達成度の違い」と言っても同じです。 achievement test「アチーブメント・テスト」のようなつながりでとらえてください。
