presentの用法
My son was taller than all the boys present. My son was taller than all the present boys. なのですがなぜ後者は間違いなのでしょうか？ 解説お願いします。

前置と後置ですね。 My son was taller than all the boys present. この場合、present（今その場にいる）男の子たちよりも息子は背が高い。 My son was taller than all the present boys. この場合、present(現在、存在する的な）男の子全員よりも息子は背が高い。 可能性として後者はちょっとおかしいですよね。世界一背が高いならわかりますが。 たぶん、その違いだと思います。

感覚的に分かっていることを改まって何故かと聞かれると説明に窮する気もしますが、そうですね、present には２つの意味があって、それを前置／後置で区別している、といったことでしょうか。 the present problem: 現在の問題 the boys present: そこにいる少年たち

こんにちは。 前者は all the boys who present. の省略です。 これだと出席しているすべての男の子と言う意味になります。 他方、後者だと、存在を表すpresentが直接boysにかかってくるので all the present boys.は世の中に存在するすべての男の子という意味になってしまい、文章全体の意味と合いません。 文法的には後者が間違いであるとは言い切れませんが、 文章全体の意味との関係から前者が（より）正しい記述となるのです。

Yesterday I saw ( ) your brother. という問題で 、 1 a girl taller than 2 a taller girl than から選ぶのですが、答えは 1 a girl taller than でした。 男の子同士の比較なら限定用法で Yesterday I saw a taller boy than your brother. と出来るとの解説でした。 ？女の子と男の子を比べることは 多種同士を比べることになってしまうのでしょうか？ 同じ人間同士、同種だと 思っているのですが、 a girl who was taller than your brother と考えねばならない訳がわかりません。 よろしくお願いいたします。

My son is a high school freshman, and we live in a nice neighborhood near several boys his age he’s known since first grade. Last year a group of the boys decided to create a haunted trail for the young kids to visit on Halloween. My son asked if he could help, but the other boys said there were too many people involved already. My son was crushed. The other boys are all athletes; my son is not athletic or cool. I spoke to several of the mothers explaining how hurt my son was. They all told me it was a misunderstanding and the boys never meant to exclude my son. Nonetheless, his friendship with these boys ended. I told my son that sometimes friendships have an expiration date, and it hurts, but it’s a lesson in how not to treat others. Now it’s Halloween again and signs have gone up inviting neighborhood kids to the haunted trail. My son saw a sign and said, “Oh, the haunted trail—where you have to be a cool kid to help with it.” This is killing me. I feel like I’m going to turn into a crazy monster if I have to keep hearing about this trail. My husband says drop it, but I’m in a rage.
