not only A but also B について教えてください。
「彼は子供たちだけでなく、老人にも親切だった。」を英文にしてみました。 He was very kind to not only children but also old people. このとき、kind to の to の位置について、なにかきまりはありますか？ children と old people は対等にしていますが、 He was very kind not only to children but also to old people. でも、 to children と to old people は対等ですから、 to は、 not only の前でもあとでもどちらでもよいのか、どちらかが正しくてどちらかが間違いなのでしょうか？ よろしくお願いします。

文法的にはどちらでも問題はありません。どちらもOKでしょう。 しかしその上で not only A but also B という用法に関しては、どちらがより好ましいか、という事をになれば、前置詞句を同格にした後者の形になるでしょう。 kind to not only A but also B kind not only to A but also to B 前者の形であれば、Bの前の to は省略される形になっています。しかしこの用法の意図としては、B に重点を置いています。故に前置詞は省略するよりもそれぞれにくっつけておいた方がこの用法の意図に適切だと考えられますよね。 もちろん文法が適切でも、その用法によっては語法が特別にある場合もあります。辞書でその都度確認していく必要があります。

私はいつも not only to children but also to old people のように書きます。 詳しくは分かりませんが、もともとは kind to children /kind to old people なので両方に to をつけたほうがいいのかなと思っています。 ちなみに old people は直接的すぎるので、 the elderly をよく使う気がします。

He was very kind not only to children but also to old people. が最も普通です。(kind to not only ではダメというわけでは全くありません) 単にイントネーション・リズムの問題と思います。kind でいったん切って、あとは to ... to ... の to に強勢をつけて「kind to」の to だとわからせる意味があると思います。 kind to not only はその後に動詞が来る場合には普通に使われます。 Kristina was so kind to not only send me photos of her wedding, but also introduced me to Amy her photographer of Daisy Photography. この場合は動詞の前に to があるとうっとうしいのだと思います。
