位置エネルギーと運動エネルギーについての話です。 Potential energy is the capacity for doing work taht a resting body possesses because of its condition or position relatitve to other bodies or objects. doing work と relative to other～はどう訳したらいいでしょうか。 It is no exaggeration to say that it is in the search for new and better sources of energy, starting with animal, wind and water power and up through the development of the internal combustion engine, hydroelectric dams, and nuclear reactors, that man's ingenuity has manifested itself most prominently and his understanding of the natural world most significantly deepened. この文章の大まかな意味は、「人間の発明の才が証明してきたものは新しくより良いエネルギー資源の研究にあると言っても過言ではない」でいいのでしょうか？his understanding of the natural～の件がよく分かりません。nuclear reactors の後のtaht からが、どうかかってくるのでしょうか？長いですが、どうぞ訳仕方を教えてください。よろしくお願いします。

翻訳者です。 最初のは、potential energy is the capacity of doing workということなので、位置エネルギーとは何かをする能力のことである、という意味ですね。物理用語で言うと「仕事をする能力」ってことばになりますでしょうか。その詳しい説明としてthat以下があるわけですが、静止している物体がもっている、と書かれています。静止物が持っている、仕事をするための能力、、、それはどっから来るかというと、その静止物体の状態や他の物体に対しての位置からくるものである、と次に説明されています。これは位置エネルギーに関して基礎的な知識をお持ちならばすぐわかる説明文でしょう。 二つ目。 まあ大まかな意味はそういうことで外れてはいませんが、もうちょっと丁寧に読んでおきましょうか。 この文章の大きな構文は、わかってます？ It is ～ that ...という、強調構文です。つまり、「....したのは（他ならぬ）～である」という構文が隠れていることをまず見抜いてください。そうすると自ずから全体の意味が見えてきます。 ～に当たる部分が、「in the search for new and better sources of energy」です。....にあたる部分が「that man's ingenuity has manifested （以下略）」です。 ならもう訳せますね。 「人類の知恵がもっとも顕著にあらわれ、自然に対する理解がもっとも深まったのは、、、」というのが....部分です。「新しい、よりよいエネルギー源の探索においてである」というのが、～の部分。～の部分をさらに説明しているのがstarting with animal, wind....（中略）and nuclear reactors,までです。 全体をまとめますと、「人類の知恵がもっとも顕著にあらわれ、かつ人類の自然への理解が最も深まったのは、動物から始まり風力、水力、さらには内燃機関、水力発電用ダム、原子炉に至るまでの、新たなよりよいエネルギー源を探索していくことにおいてであるといっても過言ではない」。 動物っていうのは多分、馬車とか水牛による耕作とか、ロバに荷物を運ばせるとかそういうことをイメージしているのでしょうね。←こういうこともイメージしつつ読んでいきましょうね。 まだご不明な点がありましたらいつでもどうぞ。

最初の文は, work とか relative の意味が分かればいいだけだと思う. 「relative to other ～」と「other」を残したのが敗因? 2つ目は長いけど「starting with ～ nuclear reactors」までが挿入句になっていることに気づけばいきなり短くなる. で, manifested 以下が 2つあるということだと思う.
