これらの有名な構文で今はあまり使われてないのがあれば教えてください。
こんにちは。 下記の構文は、英文法の問題としてはよく見る有名なものなのですが、 これらは大昔のもので、今はあまり実際に使われていないんだよ、というものがあれば、教えてください。 (1)Hardly had he entered the office when he realized that he had forgotten his wallet. (2)No sooner had he entered the office than he realized that he had forgotten his wallet. (3)Not until he had come back home did John notice that he had left his wallet. (4)It was not until he had come back home that he noticed that he had left his wallet. (5)Not a day passed but my mother prayed for me.

1)2)は「only to find」で簡単に書けてしまいますね、でも1)2)とも現在使っていないとは言えない。 3)4)は使ってはいるが、、、、よく分かりません、と言うより、自分ではこんなややこしい書き方はしない。 5)初めて見たかな、こんな古臭い言い方は。 1)2)3)4)5)、、、英語で書いたらこんな書き方をするんだって航行の参考書で見た様な見なかった様な、、、見たとしても無視していた様な気がする。

- この場合は、なぜ大過去じゃないの？
来年受験の者です。 どおしても分からないのでどうかおねがいします。 「彼の車の中にかさを置き忘れたことに気づいた。」を英訳すると、Ｉ realized that Ｉ had left my umbrella in his Car . と大過去で表現しますよね。 なのになぜ「家に着いて初めて彼の車の中にかさを置き忘れたことに気づいた。」だと Ｉ realized that Ｉ left my umbrella in his Car Only When I got home.と、大過去の表現の「had」が無くなってるんですか？ 因みこの文は、英作文対策の問題集の問題でした。この問題集には別解で「Ｉｔ is not ｕntil ～」や「Only When」を使った場合の解答もありますが、どれも「had」がありませんでした。 どうかよろしくおねがいします。

It is not until...that～の構文は「...して初めて～する」と訳せと教科書では教えています。例文を出します。 It was not until he had been away from home for many days that he found how he loved his father and mother. 質問1. ネイティブなどは上記の英文を「それは...まではなかった。それは～」と理解していくように思うのですが？ 同時通訳者などは直読直解して行くそうですが、上記ネイティブのように理解して行くのか、それとも、瞬間的に「...して初めて～する」という日本文に置き換えて理解するのかどちらなんでしょうか？ 質問2. It is not until の所ですが、意味上というか構文上というか、 頭の中で区切るとしたら、It is notで区切るのが正しいのか、It is not until で区切るのが正しいのか(つまり、notとuntilは切り離せない)どちらがいいのでしょうか？自分としては、notで一息つくと理解しやすくなるのですが、単にこの構文に慣れてないせいでそうなるのでしょうか？ 宜しくお願いします。

この英文の和訳教えてください(>_<) ↓ ↓ Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business. He realized his father was very old,and thought perhaps he should go to see him. He had not seen him since that graduation day. Before he could make arrangements,hereceived a telegram telling him his father had passed away,and willed all of his possessions to his son. He needed to come home immediately and take care of things. When he arrived at his father's house,sudden sadness and regret filled his heart. He began to search through his father's important papers and saw the still new Bible,just as he had left it years ago. With tears,he opened the Bible and began to turn the pages. And as he did, a car key dropped from the back of the Bible. It had a tag with the dealer's name,the same dealer who had the sports car he had desired. On the tag were the date of his graduation and the words PAID IN FULL.
