into the unknown 未知なるものに(theがついてますから、こう訳した方がいいですね) in a slow ゆっくりと but irresistible explosion fuelled by the energies of the Renassance. After a thousand years of ~ (~の)千年ののち、 huddling round the Mediterranean huddling をどう訳すのかですが、群衆が群がっている様子ですから、ここでは「ごたごた」としてみました。

    Money came into existence to answer a need of mankind, but this need did not arise until civilization had grown beyond its earliest stages. 私は、civilization had grown beyond its earliest stages.
