この文の構造が掴めません。
Bailey, once a vigorous and ambitious young man, was now old and very ill. ベイリーは、かつては屈強で野心に燃えた若者だったが、今は年老いて重い病気にかかっていた。 という文なのですが、よくわかりません。 「Bailey」と「a vigorous and ambitious young man」は同格なのだろうと思うのですが、wasとnowが一緒にあるところがわからないです。 どなたか解説お願いします。

Bailey, once a vigorous and ambitious young man 補足説明のようなものでしょう。別の言い方をすれば Bailey, who had been (was) once a vigorous and ambitious young man いずれにせよ同格のような捉え方でいいでしょう。 was now 厳密に言えば was then かも知れませんが、和訳でも「今～ていた」で違和感がないように、物語などでは生き生きした感じを出すため、臨場感を出すためにこういうことがよく行われます。
