GRE（数学）の問題文の意味について
GREの数学の問題で分からないことがあります。 （数学といいつつ英語の表現の質問になりますが。。） もしわかる方がいらっしゃいましたら教えて下さい。 （１） X^2 - 3X + 2 = 0 Twice the sum of the roots of the equation 答えは6との事です。答えから察するにX=-2、-1の二つである事からこれらの絶対値を足して2倍しているようなのですが、問題文の「Twice the sum of the roots of the equation」というところがピンと来ません。「方程式の√を足す」というのは、方程式の解であるXの値を一体どうするといっているのでしょうか？？ （２） ／￣／￣／￣／￣／｜ ｜￣｜￣｜￣｜￣｜／｜ ｜￣｜￣｜￣｜￣｜／ ￣ ￣ ￣ ￣ （↑縦二段、横四段、奥行一段の計八個のつもり） The rectangular solid above is made up of eight cubes of the same size, each of which has exactly one face painted blue. What is the greatest fraction of the total surface area of the solid that could be blue? A:1/6 B:3/14 C:1/4 D:2/7 E:1/3 答えはDらしいです。 面は全部で前面8＋背面8＋上下左右で12＝28。 うち、一つの箱はそれぞれ一面だけ塗られているとの事なので8/28＝2/7。というアプローチで合っているのでしょうか。 これも英語の表現が微妙にわからないのですが、問題文の最後の「What is the greatest ～ could be?」というのは、最大でいくつになりうるか、というような、なんだか他の可能性もある、みたいに読めてしまうのですが、どういう意味なんでしょうか。 宜しくお願いします。

（１） X^2 - 3X + 2 = 0 (X-1)(X-2)=0 X=1,2 です。 the roots of the equationは、 文字通り、方程式の根/解ですから、 １、２を指しています。 ２解を足して、２倍せよ、だから、 ２（１＋２）＝６ ですね。 （２） ＞＞というアプローチで合っているのでしょうか。 正しいです。 ＞＞なんだか他の可能性もある・・・。 ＊ その、他の可能性を排して最大（最大値）は何か。 なので、自然な表現に感じられます。 ＊ that could be blue? は婉曲表現とも。 ＊ 英語では、同じＷＯＲＤの再現を嫌うので、 is を could be に置き換えてあるとも考えらえます。

（１） root は根（解）のことです． したがって， 「方程式の解（2つ）を足して2倍は？」 ということです． 解は-2，-1ではないですよ． （２） > 最大でいくつになりうるか、というような、 > なんだか他の可能性もある、みたいに読めてしまうのですが 塗った面が内側になっている場合に最大値以外になりますが， 最大値はいくらか聞かれているので，これでよいのでは？

（１）ですが，rootは√と言う意味もありますが，根（こん）＝解と言う意味もあります． ので，問題文は「方程式の根の和を２倍せよ」ってことでしょう．

度々すみません。 もしわかる方がいらっしゃいましたら、教えて下さい。 （１）A list of numbers has mean 7 and standard deviation of 2.5. If x is a number in the list that is 2 stndard deviation above the mean, then x = 答えは12なのだそうですが、回答へのアプローチを教えて下さい。 （２）A distillate flows into an empty 64-gallon drum at spout A and out of the drum at spout B. If the rate of flow throught A is 2 gallons per hour, how many gallons per hour must flow out at spout B so that the drum is full in exactly 96 hours? 答えは4/3なのだそうですが、解き方を教えて下さい。 というか、英語の文章があんまりよくわからないです。。 （３）If (X+2)/(Y-3) = 0, which of the following must be true? A: X=2 and Y=3 B: X=2 and Y≠3 C: X=0 and Y=0 D: X=-2 and Y=3 E: X=-2 and Y≠3 答えはEとの事です。右辺を0にするにはX=-2、Y=3である必要があるような気がするのですが、なんでYは3ではないんでしたっけ。。数学の基本的なところだとは思うのですが、このあたりの記憶が全くないです。。 以上、宜しくお願いします。

ETS発行のGRE問題集を一冊終えたのですが、解説がないため、わからない問題が１５問程、あります。１５問も聞いたら怒られそうですが、順次質問したいと思っています。。申し訳ないのですがもしわかる方がいらっしゃいましたら、教えて下さい。 （大小比較問題の選択肢） A-if the quantity in Column A is greater. Column B: The numnber of points scored by team Y in the first half of the game. 答えはDなのですが、前半でXが10点取ったことは書かれているけど、Yが何点取ったかはわからないのでDというだけのことなのでしょうか？問題の意図がよくわからないです。。

問題 For what values of k will the roots of the equation kx^2 - 2x + 6 = 0 be real? 私は k≤ 1/6 が答えだと思うのですが 教科書の答えは k<1/6 です。 教科書の答えは間違っていると思うのですが確認お願い出来ますか？

equal roots の意味がよくわかりません。 ある問題で Find the value(s) of b if the equation 2x^2 + bx + 8 = 0 has equal roots というのがありb^2 - 4ac を使って -8, 8 という答えが出てきました。 でもequal roots の意味を知っているからではなく b^2 - 4ac＝０ の時は equal roots だと覚えているからです。 日本語でも英語でも equal roots の事を調べてみましたが 日本語名は重根 で2次以上の方程式における根のうち,相等しいもの、等の事が出てきました。 等しい、というのは負号は関係なく２つ出た答えの数字が同じ、という事でしょうか？ どなたかequal roots の意味をわかりやすく教えて頂けますか？
