公道が堤防の間から出ている地点
英文解釈教室 [改訂版] p.84 例文5.2.4 について質問です。 At a quarter of a mile from the point at which the highway issued from between the banks, was a stone post, marking the spot where three roads met and united in one. [訳] 公道が堤防の間から出ている地点から4分の1マイル行った所に1つの道標があって、3本の道が出合って1つとなる地点を示していた。 私の質問は「公道が堤防の間から出ている地点」という部分です。 堤防を辞書で調べると「土手、堤」となっており、場所は河岸・湖岸・海岸ということです。 「堤防の間」とは、堤防と堤防の間ということで、それでは「川の中」になってしまうのではないか？と考えてしまいました。一体どのような情景を思い浮かべれば良いのか、出来れば原文をご存知の方がいらっしゃったらお教え下さい。よろしくお願いします。

＃2ですが、そうですね、ご紹介した翻訳家さんの説明でもいまいちすっきりしませんね。 これはやはり＃1さんがお書きのような状況、つまり土手が道路と交差する部分で途切れていると考えた方がいいかもしれません。 ただ、それならわざわざそんなことを書かなくても「橋から4分の1マイル行ったところに」と書けばいいような気もするのですが。土手というからにはその切れた部分の公道は橋からの延長だと思うんですけど、この解釈も違っているのかな？？ もしbank が必ずしも川などの堤防ではなくて、その上に道路が走っているようなところの基礎の土盛りを指す場合もあるのでしたら（日本ではこれも土手というように思いますがどうでしょう）、イメージは浮かびますけどね。 まったく参考にもならない回答で失礼いたしました！

再びありがとうございます。 検索をしてみたところ、「ダニエル書第8章」という所に“from between the banks”がありました。聖書のようです。 後は“between the banks”で調べた所、「銀行」という意味で使われているのが多いようです。 まさか“highway”が「２軒の銀行の間」から出ているというのは無いですよね（？）。 いろいろとありがとうございました。

堤防が続いていて途中で道路の為途切れて、また堤防が続くと考えた方が良いかと思います。 おそらく川岸の道路なのでしょう。
