 初期の音楽で必要とされるタイプの broken(途切れのある?) articulation は、前述のバードの『ガリアード』に見られる。その前半部分をレガートで演奏することは、現代の運指法では全く可能なことであるが、もしそんなことをしたら、息苦しく平板で退屈な曲になってしまうだろう。しかし、この曲のダンス的な性格がすぐにはっきり現れるようなアーティキュレーションのしかたで初めのフレーズを演奏すれば、voice と voice の間の生き生きとした imitation がくっきりと際だつだろう。  このようにテーマを「性格づける」働き(characterization)は、初期の音楽を演奏する際にアーティキュレーションが果たす機能として重要なものである。それによってテーマの本質が引き出されるからである。  アーティキュレーションの機能でもう1つ重要なのは、パッセージワークの構成要素となっている小ユニットを定義づける機能である。 以上、mariandeluna さんのユーザ情報を拝見したところ、音楽にはお詳しいようですので、用語など私にわからないところは英語のままに残して、全体の流れがわかるようにだけしました。参考までということで。
