過去完了形か過去形か
ご迷惑をかけます。 次の和文の英訳：その考古学者は、ジャングルにさまよいこみ、人食い 土人たちに捕らえられ、食べられてしまった。 (1) The archaeologist wandered into the jungle, where he had been caught and eaten by the cannibals. (2) The archaeologist wandered into the jungle, where he was caught and eaten by the cannibals. Q) (1)の文はwhere以下の副詞節が過去完了時制でで、(2)の方は過去制になっていますが両方とも正しい文でしょうか。

No.1です。補足ありがとうございます。 参考書では正解は(1)ですか。理由が私にはわかりかねます。 強調のために過去完了にするというのも寡聞にして聞きません。 >The archaeologist had wandered into the jungle, where he was caught and eaten by the cannibals. 正しい英文と思います。 私の意見としては、(1)を正解とするのは参考書の間違いとしておきます。
(1)だと、考古学者がジャングルにさまよいこむ前に、人食い人種に食べられたことになり、正しくありません。 (2)は正しいです。

参考書の回答が（１）になっており、私も（２）方が正解ではないかと思ったのですが、文中で「人食い人種に食べられたこと」を強調しようとする時（１）の文のように過去完了を使用しても文として成り立つのではと考えたのですが如何でしょうか。確かに時系列でいうと考古学者が先にジャングルに迷い込み、その後、人食い人種に食べられたことになるわけですから、ご指摘の通りだとおもいます。（１）の文を時系列にしたがって次のように書き換え場合は文として成り立つのでしょうか：The archaeologist had wandered into the jungle, where he was caught and eaten by the cannibals.再度宜しくお願いします。

New Orleans suffered serious damage, though not as severe as earlier feared. （BBCより） それまで過去形で書かれていた文章がand の後 by evening , had been downgraded と過去完了になっています。 これはいったいどういうことなのでしょうか。 どうしてここに過去完了が突然現れるのでしょうか。 He had already gone to bed when I phoned him. の過去完了とどう違うのでしょう。 「by evening」があるからでしょうか。 「(勢力が衰えて)夕方までには熱帯性低気圧に格下げされてしまった」と完了を表しているのでしょうか。 「by evening」がなければ そのまま過去形で and was downgraded to a tropical storm. でもいいでしょうか。 もう一つ、カンマのことですが by evening の後ろにカンマがあるのはなぜですか。 詳しい方、よろしくお願いいたします。

If it were me [to whom it had been thrown], I would have caught it easily.” In most cases, it should be “If it were I.” という英語による文法の説明がありました。しかしこれは時制上、”If it had been me, I would have caught it easily.”となるべきではないのでしょうか？ 同じように、”He didn’t collide with me. He could have caused me and himself serious harm if he crashed into me.”と言うネイティブがいるのですが、これも” He didn’t collide with me. 皆さんはじめまして。 過去形と過去分詞の問題集を解いているのですが、下記の問題がいまいちわかりませんので、ご教示頂けますと幸いです。 問題指示文： Underline the correct answers.
