論文を書いていますが、次の記述は文法的に正しいのでしょうか。「サファイアは耐熱性だけでなく、セラミックス材料の中で小さい熱膨張の特性を持っている。」ということを書きたいのですが,ofをどこにつけるのが適当でしょうか。文法的な解説もいただけると幸いです。 Sapphire has the good property of not only heat resistance but low thermal expansion among ceramic materials. 文法的な説明は出来ませんが、このような 文での名詞＋of(などの前置詞)のときは、名刺 not only 前置詞 but (also) の順が普通と思います。 また、質問にはありませんが, このような has the good property of ... といった表現は、意味はわかりますが、あまりしないのではないでしょうか。 Sapphire has (exibits) good properties in terms of not only fire resistance but also low thermal expansion (in terms of は成句）. Sapphire excels not only in A but also B. In addition to good (superior) fire resistance, sapphire has low thermal expansion properties (a low thermal expansion property) as well. また、「セラミック材料の中で」は、耐熱性及び熱膨張の両方にかかると思いますが、熱膨張にだけかかるなら、構文を変えないといけないですね。 サファイアもセラミックの一種なんですね。知りませんでした。

大学受験用の英文解釈に出ている問題なんですが、先ず It does not matter to a great actor what part he plays, whether it is that of a king or a beggar ; but only that he plays his part well. という英文です。全体の意味は分かっているつもりですが、but以下の部分が構文としてどのように成り立っているのかが分かりません。このbutは文の最初のIt does notのnotを受けたものと考えていいのでしょうか(いわゆるnot～butの構文として)？そして、but it only matters that が省略されたものと考えていいのでしょうか？ それとbutの直前の;はどういう意味を持っているのか分かりません。 次に Whoever has to deal with young children soon learns that too much sympathy is a mistake. Too little sympathy is of course, a worse mistake. But in this, as in everything else, each extreme is bad. A child that invariably receives sympathy will continue to cry over tiny mishap; the ordinary self-control of the adult is only achieved through knowledge that no sympathy will be won by making a fuss.という英文です。mishapまではスラスラと意味が理解できるのですが、それ以下の英文、何がどんな風になればどうなるのか、言わんとしていることが理解できません。making a fussをどういう意味にとればいいのか解りません。子供を「ちやほやする」でtoo much sympathy と同じなのか、それとも別のことを言ってるのかよく解りません。どなたか解り易く教えていただけませんか。宜しくお願いします。

Unless he has had special trainning or has special insight, he will not understand that the differences are not merely matters of specific items, such as a particular way to prepare rice or bury the dead, but that those items are shaped into different patterns in an over-all system. 解説によると、後半部分の not merely matters.... but that those.... は not only (merely) but (also)の構文になっています。ところが but は that の前に置かれているのに not merely の部分は最初の that節の中に入り込んでいます。 not only...but (also)の構文は等位接続詞と同じなので but が（二回目の）that節の前に来ているのであれば、not merely も一回目の that節の前になければいけないと思うのですがどうなのでしょうか？またこのような書き方をしてしまうと誤読してしまう可能性があるように思うのですが...？ 解説は単に、「not merely の部分を（一回目の）that 節の前に出して解釈すること」とあります。しかしわざわざそんなことをしなくてはこの文はきちんと解釈できないものなのでしょうか？ 高校生なのでまだまだ文法歴が浅いです。どうかよろしくお願いします。本当は和訳も載せたかったのですが、文字数がオーバーしてしまいました。ですので必要であれば和訳を補足として載せさせていただきます。

こんにちは、いつもお世話になります。 「原仙作 著：英文法標準問題精講」より、 There can be no man of worth but has a piece of singularity. （P２２４） 語の品詞・用法のページに出てきた英文なので、butが関係代名詞という事が載っているだけで、和訳が載っていません。 興味深い英文なので、和訳を考えてみました。 piece of singularityだけは、「一風かわったところ、奇癖」と載っていました。 「一風かわったところはあっても、人するだけの価値はないだろう。」 で良いでしょうか？ 教えてください、よろしくお願い致します。

ALJAZEERAのある記事でのbetweenの使われ方について自分なりに考えてみたのでどれが正しいのか、またはどれも正しくないのか教えていただきたいです。 There have been many instances of clashes between tribal law, custom and a democratic constitution in Pakistan. (1) betweenにも３つを結ぶ用法がある。 (2) 原則に従いtribal law, customとa democratic constitutionを結んでいる。 （この場合tribal lawとcustomは同格とみます） (3) betweenとamongを書き間違えている。 （この記事内にはpubliclyをpublicallyとするなどのスペルミス、もしくは本来は間違いであるがその国では定着しているスペルが散見されます） 可能性を３つも考えましたが私としては(2)は意味的に考えて可能性が低いと思います。 (1)については手元に文法書がないのでわかりません。ですので(3)が一番可能性があるとおもうのですがいかかでしょうか。 よろしくお願いします。

この構文で、butが使われている意味がわかりません。 普通、butは、He is small, but strong.というのように、対比した意味が来ますが、not only A but also Bでは、ＡとＢが同じ関係の単語が来ます。 Tofu is not only cheap but also healthy. この文では、「安い」と「健康的」という良い意味が並ぶのに、どうして、butでつなげているのですか？この構文の場合の、butの役割は何ですか？

ご回答ありがとうございます。3番目の例文が論文にぴったりの感じなので活用させていただきます。 ちなみに、サファイアは正確には単結晶の酸化アルミニウムのことです。ダイヤモンドを除いて宝石といわれているものはたいていセラミックです。
