和訳をお願いします
We shape our buildings and, afterwards, our buildings shape us. The planet Earth is the cage within which and against which man has developed in the past and continues to develope now. 「我々は建物を形作り、そのあとで建物が我々を形作る。地球という惑星の内部にある鳥かごと地球を背景に、過去に人が発達し、現在も発達し続ける」 と訳したのですが、正直意味がわかりません。文の構造がよくわからないせいもあると思うので、その辺も教えて下さるとありがたいです。

We shape our buildings and, afterwards, our buildings shape us. 「われわれが建物を形づくり、そのあとその建物がわれわれを形づくる」 前半は、住人となる者が住居を現実に建てることを指しています。後半は、それに住まうことで今度は住居のほうが住人の生活を規定していくことを指しています。 The planet Earth is the cage... 「地球という惑星は鳥籠である」 within以降は関係詞節で、どんなcageなのかを説明する修飾語です。 within which and against which man has developed in the past and continues to develope now. 関係代名詞whichの先行詞はcageなので、whichをcageに置き換えてみます。 man has developed within the cage and against the cage in the past and continues to develope (within the cage and against the cage) now. 「人類は、過去にその鳥籠のなかで、またその鳥籠に抗いつつ発展してきており、現在もそのように発展しつづけている」。人間は、地球のなかで地球の環境に支えられて存続してきたが（within）、一方で、河川の氾濫を防ぐ堤防を造らねばならなかったというように、環境に対抗することで絶滅を免れてきた（against）ということを指しているのではないでしょうか。 全体としては「われわれが建物を形づくり、そのあとその建物がわれわれを形づくる。地球という惑星は鳥籠である。人類は、過去にその鳥籠のなかで、またその鳥籠に抗いつつ発展してきており、現在もそのように発展しつづけている」。 第2文の関係代名詞を後ろから訳し上げると長くなるので、切ってしまってよいと思いますが、つなげるとすると「われわれが建物を形づくり、そのあとその建物がわれわれを形づくる。地球という惑星は、人類が過去にそのなかで、またそれに抗いつつ発展してきており、現在もそのように発展しつづけている鳥籠である」。

The planet Earth is the cage 地球という惑星はカゴである。 within which and against which man has developed そのカゴの内部で、またこのカゴに対して、人類は発達し続けている という風に、分解してご覧になると判り易くなるかと思いました。 カゴに対して、というのは変な日本語ですので、意訳して、月面着陸や火星観測などの宇宙開発活動を示唆すると、ピーンとくる方も多いのでは。つまり、カゴの中の鳥である人類は、カゴの外に出てみたいと思うのではないかと。

こんばんは 二つ目の文の構造についてですが The planet Earth is the cage 「地球という惑星は鳥かご(のようなもの)である」がメインです じゃあ鳥かごって何よ？という部分を説明するのがwithin以下で within whichとagainst whichの「which」はcageに掛かります man has developed～は直訳すると「人間はこれまで発展してきた、そして今も発展し続ける」 within whichとagainst whichの部分をどう訳すかが難しいですが 「その中だったり、それに反してだったり」などと訳せるのかもしれません あとはもう一度jiyoyさんご自身で考え訳してみてください 参考までに
