それらしく言うなら「副詞節を導くthat」です。 見方を変えれば「that-節の前では本来あるべき前置詞が消去される」となるでしょう。 英文法上の解釈としてどっちが正しいのかは分かりません。 I am sorry that I am late. (I am sorry for my delay.) I am afraid that I can't help you. (I am afraid of my inability.) The doctor was optimistic that the patient would make a full recovery. (The doctor was optimistic about his recovery.) 以上 手元にあった英和辞典からの引用をかなり含みます。

The doctor´s careful examination of the patient brought about his speedy recovery. （医者が患者を丹念に診察したおかげで、患者はどんどんよくなった） "examination of the patient"の部分は、 「患者への診察」を意味していると思いますが、 なぜofなのでしょうか。 自分としては、toやforの方がしっくり来る気がします。 examination to the patients →患者への(診察) examination for the patients →患者のための(診察) よろしくお願いします。 ＃前置詞は難しいです・・・

一般的に「とても～なので…」の「so 形・副 that S V」と「～するために」の「so that S V」 は別物みたいに扱われていますが、果たして全くの別物なのでしょうか? 例えば次の文ですが、 I studied so hard that I was a doctor. I studied hard so that I was a doctor. 上は「私はとても熱心に勉強したので医者になった(現在は医者になっている)。」 下は「私は医者になるために熱心に勉強した(現在、医者になっているかなってないかは断定できない)。」 と一般的に訳されていますが(括弧の部分は僕個人の捉え方ですが)、 ネイティブの人はそこを意識して使っているのでしょうか? というのは『E－gate』という辞書で次の例文を見たからなんです。 He studied hard so that he won a scholarship. 「彼は一生懸命勉強して、その結果、奨学金をもらった。」 つまり一般的にso thatは「目的」で訳されていますが、「結果」もありうる。 もっと言えばネイティブの人にとって両者はそれほど違うものではなくて、 so hard thatならhardの前にsoを持ってくることによって that以下の内容とhardを密接に関連付けているだけなのかな、 と思ってしまうのですが、みなさんはどう思われるでしょうか?

He would get so involved in his play that when it was time to go home,he would cry again. 彼は遊びに熱中するあまり、帰宅する時間になるとまた泣き叫ぶのであった なんですがなぜwould getとなるんでしょうかcryという動詞があるのにgetという動詞があるのがよくわからないです（getは和訳にも入っていませんしwould getでなくwasならわかるんですが また Ｈe would enjoy himself so much in his play that he would cry again,refusing to go home. 彼は遊びを楽しんでいたので、帰宅するのを拒否してまた泣き叫ぶのであった こちらもenjoyとcryという動詞があってよくわからないです 後こちらの文はso～that…の～の部分が much in his play となっていて （とてもmuch in his play なので… となって意味がよくわからないです） わからない部分の説明がへたですいません

英語においてthat節内にthat節をいくら用いてもよいのでしょうか？ 例）That he said that that the most miserable thing in this world is the dog that was lying on the cold bench that two icy people was seated was drenched is the complete lie that nobody will believe. のように。 あと、精神的な努力を要する書物という表現は A book that it needs mental effort to read. という表現は正しいでしょうか？

以下、ある参考書から抜粋 He said that even now, even after all these years, whenever he was going to play a solo passage, he would still become very nervous and fearful that he would make a mistake. この訳は 彼が言うには、今でさえ、これだけの年月を経たあとでさえ、 独奏部分の一節を演奏 する時はいつも、 間違えるのではないかといまだに大変神経質になり、びくびくするのだそうだ。 なのですが、 質問① that he would make a mistake は 間違えるのではないかと と訳されていますが、間違えるのではないかのように、疑問文になっているのはwould の働きによるものなのでしょうか？ ここは 間違えるかもしれない のように訳しても大丈夫でしょうか？ 質問② he would still become very nervous and fearful の部分について、 この文には、なぜwould が必要なのでしょうか？ would がなくても訳には影響しないような気がしますが、would を取り去るとどのような不都合が生じるのでしょうか？ 回答よろしくお願いします！

ある本を今読んでいますが、その中で分からない部分があります。 He took away his son, and that was the last XXX had heard of JJJ, even though, in the years following,he made a number of his own discreet inquiries to try to determine what had happened. Finally word came that the boy had died. Sitting across from him, XXX couldn't help thinking, Would that he had. The buzzing in XXX's ears, ......... XXXとJJJは人の名前です。 "Would that he had." は斜体フォントになっています。 質問は次の三つです。 １．"Would that he had."の解釈。 ２．何故、"Would"がここで大文字のWになっているのか。 ３．何故、"Would that he had."が斜体フォントになっているのか。 難しいと思いますが、よろしくお願い致します。
