He walked rapidly,leaning upon his cutting-whip as he walked, as though the light switch were a stout stick. 杖の取っ手に凭れるように歩いていたと思うのですが、as though the light switch were a stout stick.の意味がわかりません。前後に明かりのスイッチの描写は出てきません。草原の中の道のシーンなので街灯でもなさそうです。 宜しくお教えくださいませ。

cutting-whip というのは馬をピシッと叩くムチみたいなものだと思います。 で、switch には「ムチに使うしなやかな小枝」という意味がありますので、ここでのlight switch は「軽い小枝」という意味ではないでしょうか。 「まるで軽い小枝が頑丈な杖でもあるかのように、ムチにもたれかかりながら素早く歩いた」という内容ではないかと思います。

『軽いムチが頑丈なスティックであるかのように、』みたいになると思います。 この文の前後を読んでみないとなんとも言えないところもありますが、 the light switch は his cutting-whip を表している気がします。 switch の意味には電気スイッチの他にムチを意味することもあります。

こんにちは。以下の２つの例文でなぜ仮定法過去、仮定法過去完了になるのか、根拠を教えてください。 1.A happy man or woman is a better thing to find than a five-pound note. 全国統一模試に出てきた問題で、 in 2000, four times as much pizza and more than three times as many hamburgers were consumed as were in 1990. という文章で、これの訳が、 「2000年には、1990年の4倍のピザ、そして3倍を超えるハンバーガーが消費された。」となっているのですが、 were consumed as were in 1990.の部分が文法的にどう解釈すればよいのかわかりません。 この訳となるのであれば、 as in 1990 were consumed.となると思うのですが、分かりません。誰か解説よろしくお願いします。

Marvin was worried about the weather. After having his dinner in a hurry, he decided, at almost 11:00 that night, to go down to the small dock to check for possible ice damage to his boat. As he walked downthe three-hundred-foot slope to the lake, Marvin was followed by his dog, Max. Max loved to run around with his master.
