Essay Question

以下のＥｓｓａｙ　Ｑｕｅｓｔｉｏｎの解釈の仕方がいま一つわかりません。アメリカの大学にapplyする予定です。このトピックスで作成する事に関して何かアドヴァイスがありましたら,その点も是非教えてください。 Imagine you are writing your autobiography and share a portion of your work with us.

こんにちは。 私だったら、どう読むかといいますと、 自叙伝を書けってことですよね。 しかも、アプライされる学校との関係もスコープにいれてってことですよね。 わたしだったら、 大学を卒業するくらいの年とか、 就職してしばらくしてとかの年になっていると仮定して、 過去を振り返って自叙伝を書きます。 もちろん、その中には今までの自分の業績や、 アプライするにいたった経緯や、 アプライする理由、 なぜその学校なのか、 その学校で何をしたいのかといった内容を あたかも過去を振り返ったつもりで具体的にかきますね。 つまり、現在のあなたの業績までは変わらないですが、 将来のことなんだけれども、過去のことのように書くってことですよね。 学校側としては、 あなたのクヲリフィケーションやモーティベーション、目標などを ちょっとユニークな形で知りたいのだと思います。 アプライされる学科がわからないので、なんともいえないですが、 将来を過去のように書くという想像のセンスも問われているのかもしれませんね。 参考にしてください。 がんばってください。 補足ですが、 自分のことをいかに客観的に考えて、見つめて分析できるか、 また、センス、あるいは自分らしさが（ほかの人との違い）どこにあるのか ということを学校側は一般的に知りたいと思います。

    中野幾雄著「技術英語攻略法」　（株）工業調査会　発行　のp43に次の英作文例があります。　昔に買った本なので，和文例が少し古いですが，ご了承下さい。 和文： タイプライターの取り扱い説明書には修理の問題はほとんど取り上げられていない。 訳例： 1) The question of repairs is seldom dealt with in typewriting manuals. 2) Typewriting manuals seldom cover the topics of typewriter repairs. 3) Although typewriter repairs are seldom discussed in typewriter manuals, (an experienced typist can make minor repairs.) 4) (An experienced typist can generally perform preventive maintenance and make minor adjustments, so) repair procedures are seldom presented in typewriter manuals. 説明： 質問は色々あるのですが，ここではとりあえずマイナーな質問をさせて下さい。 著者はこの例和文の「修理の問題」の訳し方にスポットライトを当てて，短絡的に問題  problemと置き換えるのは早計である。　使う単語の選択に気をつけることに注意を促しています。　 そこで，紹介されているのが上記４例文となります。 質問： 訳例1)と2)では「問題」は，「質問」事項の訳と判断してquestionを使うか，或いはtopicも良いだろうと言う説明され，訳例文が紹介されています。 「問題」をquestion或いはtopicと訳しだす是非もあるかと思いますが，ここでは一旦置いておいて，質問したいのは，1)文では”The question of repairs”とquestionが単数で使われています。　2)文では”the topics of typewriter repairs”とtopicsが複数で使われています。 確かに”the question of 複数名詞” と “the questions of 複数名詞” をネット上の検索をかけますと，圧倒的に”the question of 複数名詞” が多いです。　 もともとの和文である「問題」をquestionと言う英単語に置き換えるに付いては，きっと色々な質問事項があるのではないかと想像されて，複数のquestionsの方が適している様に思うのですが，現実には”the question of ”の単数questionの方が多い。　私の持っている辞書ではquestionが可算名詞として，この場合使われていると思われます。 何か”the question of ~ “　には特別な使い方があるのでしょうか？ 宜しくご教示お願い致します。
