前後の文脈によって、語釈が変わってくる部分もあるとは思いますが、私にはこのように読めました。 in the course of ～のさなかに、～の途中で intense conversation まじめな話、熱の入った会話、真剣な話、など。冗談を言い合ったり、世間話など、light conversationの反対のイメージが浮かびました。cf. listen with intense attention (真剣に注意して聞く)、a very intense speaker (非常に熱心な話し手) we know … "When a friend cries …"に対応しているので、この場合「知っている」ではなく「知る」「気付く」だと思います。 among other things 「わけても」「なによりも」other things というのはとても漠とした言葉で、この場合、友達が泣き出したことで、「それまでの話題やその場のさまざまな事がら」がギューッと後方に遠ざかり、その友達の存在だけが皆の注意の的としてクローズアップされる様子が、among other things という遠ざかる他の事々に対して、that以下が知られると表現しているのではないでしょうか。 serious demand のっぴきならない訴え、切迫した訴え being placed upon … placeは「配置する」「置く」ですが、「広告を出す」「投資する」「発注する」など、文脈と目的語によって非常に多様な意味合いを持ちます。place A upon B で、この場合A を B に「投げかける」「突きつける」ぐらいではないでしょうか(uponという前置詞に勢いを感じますので)。また、この部分を能動態に仮に直してみると、 a serious demand is being placed upon our attention → the friend is placing a serious demand upon our attention これにほぼ同じ形の例を英辞郎で見つけました。 place demands on someone for ～ ～に関して（人）に要求｛ようきゅう｝を突きつける ・ The Senate Intelligence Committee places demands on the Bush administration for documents relating to prewar intelligence on Iraq. 上院情報委員会はブッシュ政権に対して開戦前のイラク情報に関する資料を提出するよう要求している。 違っているのは、on someone のところが、upon our attentionと「人」ではなく「注意」になっていることですね。考えてみると、「注意」に対して「要求」を突きつけるというのは、「注意」と「要求」が途中でぶつかり合うようでやや不自然な表現のような気もします。そこで、our attention は「驚いて注目している私たち」を表す擬人的な表現なのかもしれないと思い当たりました。そこで、attentionを引いてみると、「注意、注目」のこうに次のような例文が見付かりました。 She was all attention to the speaker. 彼女は全身を耳にして聴いていた。 I'm all ears.(一心に耳を傾ける=聴いているわよ)に良く似た表現ですが、これで「擬人的な表現」ではないかという当たりもあながち外れていないのではないかと思われました。 ：tears demand a reaction. コロンの前の文全体に対する「解説」ないし「補足」あるいは「言い換え」。前の文のa serious demand is being placed upon …に対応して、her(or his, the) tears are demanding our reaction.といった形にはならず、tears demand a reaction.となっているのは「一般的な表現」になっているように私には見えます。「涙とは、反応を要求するものなのだ」 全体 会話に熱の入ってきたさなかに(突然)友達が泣き出したならば、私たちは何はさておき、のっぴきならない要求が注目する私たちに対して付きつけられていることを知ります：(このように)涙というものは、それに対する反応を要求するものなのです。 意訳 会話が熱を帯びてきたそのさなかに友達の一人が突然泣き出したら、私たちは他のことは一切忘れてしまって、何かただならぬ訴えが目を見張る私たちに対して付き付けられていることを知ります。このように、涙というものは、それに対する反応を呼び起こすものなのです。

うーむむむ・・・なるほど。 I'm all attention なんていう言い方もアリなんですね。知りませんでした。 ＞among other things という遠ざかる他の事々に対して、that以下が知られる ということはamong other thingsが挿入的に入ってて、もとはwe know thatという形である、 ということでいいんでしょうか？
