訳はrosepinkさんのおっしゃるとおりでしょう。 「伝えられているところでは（reportedly）、竹下は、その黒幕としての（as fixerをちょっと意訳。rosepinkさんの「取りまとめ役」の方が自然な訳だと思います）権勢の絶頂期に（during the zenith of his power ）、「使い捨て」（"Use and discard," ）という言い方を冗談交じりによく言っていた（～と冗談で言うのを好んだ＝was fond of saying in jest）」 英語の文章の意味を理解するのに大事なのは、主語と動詞の意味です。この文ならば、 Takeshita was fond of saying "Use and discard" . という基本的な構造をまず理解することが重要です。"reportedly""in jest""during the zenith of his power as fixer"はこの基本的構造を修飾する語句であり、解釈は後回しで良いのです。 この文ならまず、"fond"の意味を辞書で引けば、ある程度大きな辞書なら"be fond of ～ing"という慣用表現の説明が出ているはずです。「好んで～する」というこの語句の意味が分かれば、「竹下が好んで"Use and discard," といっていた」という文の一番肝心な部分は理解したと言えるでしょう。あとは、先に挙げた修飾的な語句の意味を付け足してゆけば、だいたいの文意はつかめると思います。あとはひたすら読む経験でしょう。 もう一つ重要なのは、この文の前後の文（文脈）から考えるということです。私の書いた訳は一応自信がある訳ですが、前後の文脈によっては多少の訳語の変更は必要かもしれません。それはご質問に文脈が書いていない以上、こちらからは判別のしようがないことです。逆に言えば、たとえばこの「竹下」について、私は「竹下元首相」と想像したのですが、それが正しいのか、それとも全然別の人なのか、stssさんは前後の文脈から判断することが出来るはずです。そういったこともまた、「訳」（文意の理解）の過程だと思ってください。 偉そうなことをいろいろ書いてしまいましたが、何はともあれ、頑張って訳してみてください。

こんばんは、お世話になります 【英文】 The dictionary informs anyone who use it of the meanings which are generally attached to words. 【日本語訳】 辞書はそれを使う全ての人に、単語に一般的にあると考えられている意味を知らせる。 となっているのですが、このattachedの部分の訳を 「単語に一般的に付随している意味を」 とすると間違いになるでしょうか？ もし「あると考えられている」とする方が良いのでしたら、その理由も含めて 英語にお詳しい方、教えて下さい

I was away from the front desk to take the salesman where he needed to go. The patient who came in texted the doctor, saying she was ignored and his staff is incompetent and rude. I also watched the Bush/Kerry compaign, but many people said the only reason Bush won was that the democrats had such a weak candidate. 英字新聞の記事に<Daisuke Matsuzaka is all business as he throws during his major league debut against the ～>という文章があるのですが、「松阪はメジャーリーグのデビュウ戦で投げた時すべての任務をはたす」という意味になるのかな？と思うのですが、それなら<do>だろうしSVCで訳すと「松阪はall businessだ。」って何？<all>のあと<business>が複数になってないので「すべて」ではなく「全く」か？とも思うのですが、businessに何かピタリトするイメージの言葉が辞書では見つかりません。どなたかわかる方解説お願いいたします。
