"the day before yesterday"
…は、間接話法の中ではどのように使うことができますか？ 例えば、 She said to me, "I arrived here the day before yesterday." というのは、 She told me that she had arrived there two days before. でよいでしょうか。 まさかとは思いますが、下のような言い方はあるのでしょうか？ She told me that she had arrived there the day before the day before???

おはようございます。 No.1の方の補足になりますが、 She told me that she had arrived there two days before. と間接話法で言っているということは、現時点を基点にして two days before つまり「２日前」ということですから、the day before yesterday でもたまたま示している日が同じことになる（２日前＝おととい）のでＯＫということなのです。 the day before yesterday をそのまま間接話法の中で使っても問題ないという意味ではありません。 She told me と過去形で言われた場合、それが過去のいつの時点なのかわからないと、いつの時点を基準にしているかがはっきりしません。 彼女が自分に教えてくれたのが今月の20日だとして、 She told me that she had arrived there the day before the 20th. という言い方も文法的には間違っていませんが、こういう回りくどい言い方をするよりはダイレクトに、 She told me that she had arrived there on the 19th. （on はくだけた会話では省略してもよいですが、この場合 on が入った方が語呂がいいので on を入れてみました） あるいは、今日（10月23日）を基点にして、 She told me that she had arrived there four days before. つまり、 ～ days before というように「～日前」と言うか「～月～日に」と言った方が具体的でわかりやすいです。

間接話法にしたとき、2日前なら >She told me that she had arrived there two days before. とするのは、常に使える標準的(?)な言い替えですが、"She told me" が今日のことであれば（例えば、朝聞いて夜話すときなど）、 >She told me that she had arrived the day before yesterday. としたほうがわかりやすいといえます。逆に書き物などで、いつ読まれるかわからないときは、20th, Oct. のように日にちを明示したほうがよいこともあります here も同様で、例えば「彼女」が自分の家に来て、自分の家でそのことを話しているなら、there ではなく、here でなければなりません。 直接⇔間接話法の言い替えは、聞き手/読み手の立場に立って表現を考えることが大事になってきます。 －－－ なお、 >She told me that she had arrived there _the day before the day before_. のような言い方は普通はしません。

She said to me, "I arrived here the day before yesterday."は She said to me, "I arrived here two days ago."の意味ですから、 She told me that she had arrived there two days before.でいいです。 ご存知だとは思いますが、 ago「（現在を基準として）～まえ」 before「（過去を基準として）～まえ」 ですからね。 また、 She told me that she had arrived there the day before the day before??? はやはり意味不明になってしまいますね。

仰るとおり、 She told me that she had arrived there two days before. で良いと思います。 また She told me that she had arrived there the day before yesterday. でも可です。

早速のご回答ありがとうございます。 確認なのですが、"the day before yesterday"は、そのまま間接話法の中で使っても問題ないということでしょうか？

ありがとうございます。 "yesterday"を機械的に"the day before"に置き換えたら上記のようになってしまったんですけど、やっぱりこんな文は変ですよね。
