[Yet it also has an opposite effect]とありますが、「an opposite effectとは何か具体例に即してのべよ」という質問があるのですが、「具体例に即して」というのは、何か具体例をあげて答えろと言うことなのでしょうか?? Globalization thus is a complex set of processes, not a single one. And these operate in a contradictory or oppositional fashion. Most people think of globalization as simply ‘pulling away’ power or influence from local communities and nations into the global arena. And indeed this is one of its consequences. Nations do lose some of the economic power they once had. [Yet it also has an opposite effect.] Globalization not only pulls upwards, but also pushes downwards, creating new pressures for local autonomy. The American sociologist Bell describes this very well when he say that the nation becomes not only too small to solve the big problems, but also too large to solve small ones.

No.1です。

Globalization is the reason for the revival of local cultural identities in different parts of the world. If one asks, for example, why the Scots want more independence in the UK, or why there is a strong separatist movement in Quebec, the answer is not to be found only in their cultural history. Local nationalisms spring up as a response to globalizing tendencies, as the hold of older nation-states weakens. [Globalization also squeezes sideways.] It creates new economic and cultural zones within and across nations. Examples are Hong Kong region, northern Italy, and Silicon Valley in California. Or consider the Barcelona region. The area around Barcelona in northern Spein extends into France. Catalonia, where Barcelona is located, is closely integrated into European Union. It is part of Spain, yet also look outwards.

回答No.2

Through a combination of immigration and difference in birthrate among ethnic groups, many countries in western Europe are experiencing a change in their ethnic and cultural composition. There are various reactions to these developments. At one end of the range are the radical cosmopolitans, who view nation states and national identities as dangerously old-fashioned. At the other end are the ethnic nationalists who wish to defend the purity of their own nation against all newcomers. My own position lies between these extremes. Immigration on a modest scale brings benefits in the form of diversity and new ideas, but the pace of the present transformation in Europe worries me. I believe it inevitably invites conflict.I also believe that nations are historical communities that have the right to shape their own collective future as they see fit, and to resist developments that gradually injure their identity and sense of continuity. I do not believe that national identity can, or should, be remade at will by a cosmopolitan elite to be consistent with its own vision of how the world should be. Many nations, especially in Europe, have deep roots and their existence promotes the global diversity that cosmopolitans claim to value. Many cosmopolitans agree that “oppressed peoples”such as the Palestinians have rights to a homeland and identity, but they deny such rights to the historic majorities of western Europe. European nation states are facing a challenge on many different levels. It is not just an issue of immigration and ethnic transformation. Global economic developments in trade, production and finance have partly undermined the internal unity of their national economies, while political developments are challenging their sovereignty and internal democratic structures. It is not surprising that the people most hostile to immigration are also the most hostile to economic globalization and to supranational institutions. They are raising, although often in anti-foreigner form, issues of community, identity and self-determination that should concern all democrats. Benedict Anderson invented the term “imagined community” to describe a nation. Some writers have interpreted this term as practically equal to“imaginary”and therefore unreal. But this is false. A nation is no more imaginary than a language. Indeed, they are similar and related. Both have an abstract, symbolic aspect that establishes a connection between people who do not personally know each other. Both have historical roots and, once established in the minds of the people, take on a life of their own. A nation is a community and as such is to some extent exclusive. Its members share a sense of common identity and have special moral duties to each other. The national community also has moral duties to outsiders, although these are more limited than towards its own members. Not everyone in the community will share this sense of identity and duty to the same extent. Some people may hardly feel part of the nation at all because they are too self-absorbed or too cosmopolitan in attitude. Some people may identify strongly with certain features of the nation, but not with others. But these differences do not matter, as long as there is enough common ground to give the nation internal unity and preserve a sense of historical continuity.

What is poverty? Poverty is not having enough resources to obtain sufficient amounts of life's necessities, such as food, water, health cere and education. Without education, most people have very little hope of pulling themselves out of poverty. Providing education is the most important way to help a community or nation rise above poverty. Many people think that the best way to the poor of the world is by providing them with food. Believe it or not, this actually makes things worse! Why? An ancient Chinese proverb says, "Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day; teach him how to fish and he will eat for a lifetime." Supplying food to the poor without teaching them how to grow their own food will help them only for as long as the food lasts. But if we can teach poor nations how to farm better and how to create stronger economies and help them build schools to educate children, these benefits will last a lifetime. What causes poverty? There are many factors. There include a dry climate with very little rain, low levels of education, and political and economic inatability. The biggest cause of poverty, however, is the ever-widening gap between the rich and the poor. Did you know that the three richest people in the world have more money than all of the people in the poorest 48 countries? This type of inequality exists not only in poor countries but also in the United States. In fact, the richest 10% of Americans receive almost one third of the nation's income. Poverty will not be an easy problem to solve. Can you think of any idea that might help wipe out poverty in the world.

There are men who love out-of-doors who yet never open a book;and other men who love books but to whom the great book of nature is a sealed volume, and the lines written therein (1) made indistinct. Neveretheless among those men who I have known the love of books and the love of outdoors,in their highest expressions, have usually gone hand in hand.It is an affectation for the man who is praising outdoors to sneer at books.Usually the keenest appreciation of what is seen in nature is to be found in those who have also profited by the stored and recorded wisdom of their fellow men.Love of outdoor life, love of simple and hardy pastimes, can be gratified by men and women who do not possess large means, and who work hard;and so can love of good books (2)(3)-not of good bindings and of first editions, (4)(5)excelled enough in their way but sheer luxuries-I mean love of reading books, owning them if possible of course, but,if that is no possible, getting them from a circulating library.

the second shock was an economic shock and the direct result of a combination of american economic problem: a growing trade imbalance with japan and a dollar that had become too highly valued in the rest of the world. a package of economic policies was announced by president nixon in august that led to an immediate 10% reduction in the value of the dollar (which meant that japanese goods would be more expensive in the u.s) and a temporary 10% tax on imports. the shift in the japanese-american relationship was not only caused by the increased power of japan; america's dominant position in the world was also undergoing serious changes. the watergate scandals and the loss of the war in vietnam combined to cause the american people to lose faith in themselves and to question america's role as the leader of the western bloc. the oil crisis of 1973 added to this malaise by decreasing america's economic ability to support its overseas defense commitments. many congressmen questioned why the u.s was spending money to defend japan when it was increasingly obvious that increased japanese economic strength was one cause for the economic recession in the u.s.

(1)Education has been called America's religion. Today more than 56 million Americans are attending school. One half of all the people in the country between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five are enrolled in either a college or university; close to 49 million boys and girls are going to school. Education is an enormous ( and expensive ) part of American life. Its size is matched by its variety. The widely different educational system and possibilities are as difficult for an outsider to understand as anything about American life. (2)Differences in American schools compared with those found in the majority of other countries lie in the fact that education here has long been intended for everyoneーnot just for a privileged elite. Schools are expected to meet the needs of every child, regardless of ability, and also the needs of society itself. This means that tax-supported public schools offer more than academic subjects. It surprises many people when they come here to find high schools offering such courses as typing, sewing, radio repair, computer programming, or driver training, along with traditional academic subjects such as mathematics, history, and languages. Students choose their curricula from a large serection of courses, depending on their interests, future goals, and level of ability. The underlying goal of American education is to develop every child to the utmost of his or her own possibilities, however great or small these may be, and to give each one a sense of civic and community consciousness. (3)Because there is no national religion and because there are so many different backgrounds and origins among the people, schools have traditionally played an important role in creating national unity and “ Americanizing ” the millions of immigrants who have poured into this country from its earliest days. Schools still play a large role in the community, especially in small towns. (4)The approach to teaching may seem unfamiliar to many, not only because it is informal, but also because there is less emphasis on learning facts than is true in the systems of many other countries. Instead, Americans try to teach their children to think for themselves, to delve, to explore, to develop their own intellectual and creative abilities. Students spend much time learning how to use resource materials, libraries, statistics, computers. Americans believe that if children are taught to reason well and to research well, they will be able to find whatever facts they need throughout the rest of their lives. Knowing how to solve problems is considered more important than the accumulation of facts, which often grow obsolete. (5)Computers are used in many classrooms, frequently starting in kindergarten. If a child doesn't know how to use computers, parents can help him or her a great deal by providing computer lessons in advance, so the child will not feel handicapped. To find such classes, one can consult the school or ask a local computer store where classes are given. (6)This is America's answer to the searching question that throughtful parents all over the world are asking themselves in this fast-moving time: “How can one prepare today's child for a tomorrow that one can neither predict nor understand? http://res.chinaedu.com/eol/005/eol08_4.htm 【設問】 ・第3段落、‘schools have traditionally played an important role’ の具体的内容 →‘creating national unity~this country’の箇所にしました。 ・最終段落、‘the searching question’の具体的内容 →“How can~understand?”
