Is there such a thing as a stupid question?
- In NHK Practical Business English Lesson 6(2), Pat McMillan mentions the cliché 'there really is no such thing as a stupid question ― only stupid answers.'
- The expression 'such a thing' is also used in some cases, like 'is there such a thing as umbrella etiquette here in America?' or 'I know there's such a thing as impulse buying.'
- There are variations, such as 'there's no longer such a thing as off the record' or 'there certainly is an awful lot of chaff out there in cyberspace.'

such asの文法について疑問に思ったことがあり、確認のためネットで検索していると And each of them is such as his like is? という文を見つけました。 「such A as...＝A such as...（・・・するようなA）」のasは比較で使われるas...asの後ろの接続詞のasだとネット上で知ったのですが、（実際辞書にもasは関係代名詞・接続詞と書いてあります）Aがない場合があるとも辞書にあり、それが上の文だと思います。（ここが間違っていたら元も子もありませんが、、、） この場合suchは代名詞だと思うのですが、本来比較の接続詞のasは「as＋形容詞（副詞）＋as...」と前に形容詞（か副詞）がある形で使うと思いますが、上のようなsuchが代名詞の文では前に形容詞（副詞）がない形になっていますよね？ 比較as...asの接続詞のasは前に形容詞（副詞）がなくても使われることがあるのでしょうか？ 細かい質問ですみませんが、どなたかご回答をお願いします。

大変分かりやすい例題をいただいて助かります。 なかなか頭が切り替わらない最近ですので、“nothing like”という記憶にある言い換えは納得できる説明です。この講座でも５つほど例文がありました。その１つですが Collins: Don't forget the pubs. There's nothing like sitting in front of a roaring fireplace, sipping a pint of stout, trading jokes and stories and, if you're lucky, listening to some locals playing wonderful Irish folk music. @2014年8月L9(3) 大抵の例文が、nothing but goodという感じですが、基本的には「他にない」はよいことなのかな。 Brexit後も、Irish Pubsは生き残るでしょうか… また「ただ飯はない」というのはよく見るフレーズですが、世の中 “free answer”があるのは非常に助かります。そのうち「ただではない」 “free”も調べてみます。
