>Nevertheless, the discussion taking place in Japanese society about this term is healthy. People are beginning to question old stereotypes. A similar thing happened in the United States a generation ago. At that time there was much discrimination againgst homosexulas, and the negative term "queer" was used to describe them. *the discussion taking place in Japanese society~is healthy.:「日本社会で起こっている・行われている議論は、健全なものです」。

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/queer

Then something strange happened. Homosexuals began using the term to describe each other. Suddenly, the word "queer" lost its negative nuance. "Queer" no longer was something bad. In fact, the news of Japan’s working poor would not be surprising for those coming from outside Japan. Most countries in the world have even larger populations of working poor. In this sense, Japan has been quite late in developing a population of lower class people. In another sense, having a class-based society is quite a natural phenomenon. Therefore, Japan was quite unusual in having few working poor in the past. This may mean that in the future, we can expect to see more working poor similar to other countries.

She would talk about anything or nothing at all. Yet, without exception, there was something queer, in a slanted sort of way, about every episode she mentioned. If she spoke of taking Sammy to the barbershop, the impression she created was just as foreign as if she were telling of an afternoon in Bagdad.

Eyschen was not alone in letting his principles obstruct government business. In the summer of 1915, Eyschen pushed to further reduce the role of the Catholic Church in the state school system. Grand Duchess Marie-Adélaïde objected. A fervently religious Catholic (as was most of the country, but not her late father, who was Protestant), she was reputed to have said, "I will not allow their most precious heritage [Roman Catholicism] to be stolen while I have the key."Marie-Adélaïde refused to budge, inviting Eyschen to resign if he could not accept her decision. Eyschen nearly did, but decided to control himself. Nevertheless, he would not be long in the job.

Tiger shoes were very popular among top runners. To make his company’s shoes appeal not only to top runners but also to average people, Onitsuka decided in 1977 to change the company’s name to ASICS. The letters ASICS were the first letters of the Latin Phrase “Anima Sana In Corpore Sano,” or “A healthy mind in a healthy body.”

Nevertheless Cadorna's continued offensives along the Soča (Isonzo) did succeed in wearing away at Austro-Hungarian resources, both in terms of manpower and in crucial artillery availability. As each battle proceeded the Italians' war of attrition seemed ever more likely to wear the Austro-Hungarians into defeat, short of assistance from their German allies. The Eighth Battle of the Isonzo followed on 10 October 1916.

You should study the terms below and be ready to provide a short paragraph(3-4 sentences), which provides two key pieces of information: 1. Identify and describe what the term was. 2. Explain the historical significance of the term. Usually, students find part, the identification and description easier. For this first part, you must explain who a person was, or describe what happened during an event, or what a concept means. It usually helps to also indicate when the person lived, event took place, or concept was relevant. However, the most important part of the answer to an ID term is the historical significance of it: Why the person, event, or concept was important for our study of the past. As you study ID Terms for the exams, make sure that you can clearly explain why the term in your answer is to have a sentence which begins "(this term) was important because... " and then provide the reason.

Years ago, I participated in the rescue of a child from bondage. Destiny (not her real name) was 13. She had been repeatedly raped by a pair of predators to "educate" her. Then, along with several other young girls, she was forced to sell herself to strangers. Each day, she woke to the threat of disfiguring brutality if she failed to bring in sufficient money that night. Later, it was reported that "pimps" had been arrested, and "a number of child prostitutes were taken into custody." What was wrong with calling Destiny a "child prostitute"? After all, she was a child, and she was engaged in prostitution. First, the word itself implies a judgment of character. Don't we call people who sell out their moral convictions in exchange for personal gain "whores"? More important, prostitution implies a willing exchange. Ultimately, the term "child prostitution" implies that little children are "seductive," that they "volunteer" to have sex with adults in exchange for cash (which, of course, the children never see).

There are still thousands of academic Marxists, but almost no academic anarchist. This lag is somewhat difficult to interpret. In part, no doubt, it’ because Marxism has always had a certain affinity with the academy which anarchism obviously lacked: Marxism was, after all, the only great social movement that was invented by Ph.D. Most accounts of the history of anarchism assume it was basically similar to century thinkers [Proudhon, Bakunin, Kroptkin…] that then went on to inspire working-class organizations, became enmeshed in political struggles, divided into sects…

A recent book has used the term "loser dog" to describe women over 30 years old who are not married and have no children. For women who are married, the author used the term "winner dog." Using the term, "loser," follows the stereotype discussed above in which women who are not married are considered to have failed in life. However, the term "loser dog" may be taking on a new meaning. As society becomes less conservative in its thinking, and as women gain more social statues, "loser dog" may no longer mean the woman is a loser.
