「Who is the author of Dragonstar?」 「How will the people on the list be notified?」

I am opposed to the idea that we access only the Internet when we look for something, and that we needn't use books at all. Of course the Internet is very easy to use and useful, because all you have to do is only retrieving the information you want. But, using nothing but the Internet is very dangerous. One of some reasons is the Internet involve too much information, of course false information. Many people you don't know use it, so information on the Internet are not always reliable and it is very difficult to choose only true information. On the other hand, books are published after they are checked closely. So they seldom have false information. I think it is good to use both of the Internet and books, then you can get true information quickly.

Does the Earth have the natural resources to support this many people? Unfortunately, the answer to this question depends on information we don't have. For example, we don't know how people will choose to live in the future. We don't know what their standard of living will be. We also don't know what new technologies will be available in the future. We do know that the Earth's natural resources are limited. Fresh water, for example, is crucial for health and food production. However, more than 97% of the water on Earth is salt water, which is poisonous to both people and crops. Only 3% of the water on Earth is fresh water, and three quarters of that fresh water is frozen at the North and South Poles. Today, the demands for fresh water is greater than the supply in roughly eighty countries around the world. By 2025, scientists predict that forty-eight countries will have chronic shortages of water. At present, disalinization, or the removal of salt from salt water, is not a solution to the shortage of fresh water. It takes a lot of energy to remove the salt from ocean water, and that makes the disalinization process very expensive.

❶This fact makes us think about the meaning of eco-tours. (1)How old is Jomon Cedar considered to be? (2)Why did people in Yakushima have to offer boards of cedars as nengu (land tax) in the Edo period? (3)Why can't people touch or get close to Jomon Cedar? (4)It is though that Jomon Cedar was discovered 2000-4000 years age. (5)In the Edo period, people in Yakushima cut down cedars to grow rice. (6)Only Jomon Cedar was left uncut in the Edo period. 本文 The last picture is, as you all know, Jomon Cedar. It's one of the oldest and largest cedars in Yakushima. It was discovered in 1966. Can you imagine how old and how large it is? It is considered to be 2000-4000 years old. Some people say it is 7200 years old! It is 25.4 m in height and it is 5.2 m in diameter. Tomorrow we will look for this tree on the tour. In the Edo period, people in Yakushima began to cut down cedars. They had a poor rice crop because there was little land for growing rice there. As a result, they had to offer boards of cedars as nengu (land tax). Fortunately, some cedars over 1000 years old were left uncut then because they were not suitable for making boards. That's why we can still see them as well as Jomon Cedar! I'm very sorry to say that we can't touch or get close to Jomon Cedar. We can only look at it from a distance. That's because many tourists stepped on the roots and damaged the tree. ❶(This fact) makes us think about the meaning of eco-tours. That's all for the orientation. Do you have any questions?

The amount of land we can use to produce food is also limited. Today, roughty 11% of the land on Earth can be used for crops, while another 20% is available for raising animals. Each year, however, more of this land is lost as cities grow and roads stretch across the land. In addition overcultivation has already damaged an amount of farmland equal to the size of the United States and Canada combined. It is possible to increase the amount of farmkand, but only a little. Some farmland can be more productive if people start using different farming methods, but this will not increase worldwide production very much. While we have many different sources of commercial energy, there is a limited supply of many of them. Today, most of the world's commercial energy comes from three nonrenewable energy resources―petroleum, natural gas, and coal. Three quaters of this commercial energy is used by developed countries. As the standard of living goes up in other contries, so will the demand for energy. Some scientsts predict that if everyone in the world lived like an American, our fossil fuel supply would last for just fifteen more years. Clearly, the number of people that the Earth can support in the future will depend on many things. The Earth may be able to support 9 billion people, but what will their standard of living be? And what effect will all these people have on the environment?

When we talk about conservation of the tropical rainforests we must first look at who owns them. The vast majority of them are found in developing countries, nations which generally have a much (1) standard of living than countries of the developed world. For them, conversation is simply a laxury. They have most pressing concernsーpaying off huge debts to banks in developed countries, feeding their people, rising the standard of living and preserving national security. All these concerns directly threaten the forests. One (2) method of earning foreign exchange to pay off debts and to raise the standard of living is to export valuable hardwood timber. One of the most obvious ways to feed the people is to give them land which hasn't already been farmedーthe land where the forest grows. One of the best ways of protecting the remote borders of a country, particularly when that border is disputed by its neighbours, is to move lots of people into the area. The tropical rainforest is therefore seen as a commodity to be removed for quick cash.   In these circumstances it is easy to see why tropical countries not only 【fail respond to pressure from foreign conservationists】 but also resent being told by outsiders what they should or shouldn't do with their own forests. Dr. Mahatir, the Prime Ministor of Malaysia, repeatedly makes the point that in Europe (3) areas of forest were used as fuel for the Industrial Revolution, a development which led to the privileged economic position of the Western world today. Now, as he attenpts to industrialize his country, Dr.Mahatir deeply recents being told not to cut down his forests. The tropical countries can also point to the contribution which the developed world makes to the greenhouse effect today. 【Although the tropical rainforests is adding to the problem, it is the developed countries which created that problem in the first place. 】The industrialised nations need to show some willingness to clean up the mess they have created before they can dictate to the developing countries on matters of conservation.
